even now there are still the ye olde diesels running around.

you know the sort, the run on old chip fat, vodka, and probably old cider

anywho, what sort of things can you do to them tuning wise to get more power.

other than just putting a bigger turbo on them(the TD's that is)

Without a turbo there is nothing you can do to increase performance. Anything with forced induction is a fair candidate, although the torque and power gains aren't going to be as startling as those you can get from a high pressure DI engine with electronic control.

You'll also work much harder to get 'em. It's a process of trial and error, manually adjusting wastegate actuator rods and then manually adjusting the boost/fuel compensation at the injection pump to deliver extra fuel under boost conditions.

I have never tried this but have heard stories of about 120bhp from a Peugeot 1.9 XUDT engine. To me that sounds high, but if you can tolerate the smokesceen at the back then it might be achievable.

More modern machinery is dead simple. Mine went from 136 to 192 bhp with a remap alone. As if that's not enough the torque now peaks at nearly 330lbft (nearly 450Nm!!) and I still see around 40mpg as an average figure without making any concessions at all to driving style.
