Would you buy a used car in the following circumstances.

There was no documentation, only 1 key and no service histrory.

The dealer met you at the side of the road and only used a mobile number.

It was a good friend or family member selling you the car.

The car was very cheaply priced for what it is.

Without seeing it.

Without running a history car data search

Personally these are all walk aways as far as I'm concerned but 1000's of people still seem to buy cars in these situations.

Would you consider buyinga car in any of these scenarios?

Not a chance.

Although my mother agreed to purchase an "immaculate" Peugeot 206, and phoned my father who wired the money to the seller. When it arrived home it was an absolute heap. Her response...

"It looked immaculate, I only saw it from a distance".

I must admit, I folded with laughter...

I bye most of my cars that way, I usually just get a text message telling me what car it is and a price.

would not buy one with out a v5 unless it was a cat c write off but then i dont buy them anyway buy it without seeing it done that would not buy off the side of the road unless i liked the car and had a good look round

histroy i never look at dont really care what he car was years ago i am driving it today not yesterday

but normlay if i like it i buy it

There was no documentation, only 1 key and no service histrory. (No way)

The dealer met you at the side of the road and only used a mobile number. (If car is good cond, all docs etc...i dont see a problem)

It was a good friend or family member selling you the car. (for sure!)

The car was very cheaply priced for what it is. (again definatly...as long as everything checks out)

Without seeing it. (if it was cheap enough...)

Without running a history car data search (no!)

Personally these are all walk aways as far as I'm concerned but 1000's of people still seem to buy cars in these situations.

id think about buying fro a family member or close freindassuming i knew a history on the car and the way they drive it
but even so if the car is crap, then ull probably cease to be close with that particualr person
i would buy a car on side of road, only if the dealer didnt arange it to be bought thare but for advertising
history is important, i was going to buy a holden vectra and the guy selling it to me said it was a new engine 5000 km's ago
but he was puttign 2 stroke in the engine and refilling the oil
which was empty when we arrivied
after checking service history it was his father who owned the auto shop he did engine repairs in so yeh history is important
and would never buy a car without seeing it

this has came up a couple of times by cons. they sell you the car at the side of the road and watch you fill out the V5 they then know where you live and go with a spare key later on and take the car back

I would tend to completely avoid anything with even a spec of rust underneath or in a seam. I just feel this is an indication of what the rest of the car will look like in a few years time.

A rusty stone chip I can live with as these are easily fixed and not deeply ingrained.

i key no problem
service history, irrelevant
no docs, if from the auction ok as they are liable

yes - done it before (but had a check on the vehicle)

It was a good friend or family member selling you the car.
yes

The car was very cheaply priced for what it is.
yes - if check on the VIN is ok

Without seeing it.
yes

Without running a history car data search.
not in the past 10yrs and wont do it again

waynne - rust no it wouldnt depending on the age and type of car. once bought an escort with the whole back floor rotten away, only held up by a carpet - but the car cost gbp80 and had a 6month mot.

I guess if the car is an appreciating classic it's worth taking on and doing the rust yourself.

No to all of them.
Apart from buying from a friend.
I did this with my ST24 had no issues with the car and still friends.

Even if I went to buy from a friend, I don't think I would feel comfortable with some of those on the list.

* means - only if i wanted that car and could not get another one easily

There was no documentation, only 1 key and no service histrory. (1) *it would need to be priced accordingly but it it was YES

The dealer met you at the side of the road and only used a mobile number.(2) more dodgy for sure

It was a good friend or family member selling you the car.(3) again not a problem - the history is known and why its for sale

The car was very cheaply priced for what it is. (4) If people say no to this I dont beleive them for me a definate yes

Without seeing it. (5) * not unless it was so rare of so cheap

Without running a history car data search (6) * It wouldnt stop me buying a car if I really wanted it but I would like to think I could tell if it had been badly crashed

Sometimes a car might be (4) because of (1) (3) or (6)

To be the above is because I do beleive I could tell if the car wsas "dodgy"

^^ That made interesting reading Brian. You are a lot more experienced about these things than me. For the past 25 years I have only ever bought a car direct from a large main dealer.
