Would a diesel scrappage scheme be the best answer

Diesels are bad, or that's what we are currently told. I can't recall if red wine or chocolate are currently good for us or bad for us either but I'm going off topic.

Would a diesel scrappage scheme be a good idea? I've heard proposals for a £2000 off against a less polluting new car if you scrap a diesel car. Will that reduce the number of polluting diesels?

Should the scheme be limited to towns and cities areas which suffer from pollution?
