Why do you think that car parking spaces are so small now?

The obvious reason is so they can fit in more cars but I think we can come up with some conspiracy fees.

Heres mine.
"The car park designers are sponsored by those paint free dent removal specialists!"

What do you reckon?

Makes parking more difficult for those less able than ourselves so if your wheel is touching the white line they can put a lovely yellow sticker on your window for not parking in the bay. I'll see if i can find the photo i received after i got a parking ticket.

1 reason could be most carparks have been around for years and cars have been getting bigger and bigger;)

I would tend to agree with this! The spaces in the two multi-storey car parks over at Canary Wharf in London that I have been too are great! You can park a Bentley open the doors and there is room enough for even the most generously proportioned gent to step out into.

Car parking space at any NCP in London will require you to align your car up to the parking spot first, then step out, lock the car and then push it back into the space provided. :amuse:

This is correct. They used to be 8' by 16' and this was converted to 2.4 m by 4.8m

Cars have become wider but the building regs have not been updated to reflect this.

Car parks in California have much wider bays (obviously) but also a double line between each bay abound 2 feet apart, allowing even more room. Mind you, they do have the space.

I am absolutely certain that it has nothing whatsoever to do with the Government's desire for us all to drive about in smaller, ulta low-emissions vehicles. :) :)

It's totally improbable that when planning apps are submitted that this is considered, even if it's never stated explicitly.

And although the low or zero road tax is a buyer incentive, a newly registered car still affords the treasury a healthy little sum in terms of VAT and other disbursements. As do the fees for disposal of the old vehicle.

Whan a planning application is submitted the parking provision is carefully checked against the current regulations. I have seen many applications thrown out due to inadequate parking provision. However, it isn't up to the planner to decide on the right size for a parking bay, he has to abide by the rules.

That's exactly my point. The regulations aren't set by the planners. So regs are supplied by central government to suit its own needs.

The regs on parking bays was set many years ago, way before global warming was even thought about by governments, it just hasn't been updated. One reason is pressure from developers not wanting to lose valuable land to parking.

That's fair enough and makes perfect sense. I'd also like to see a bit more land devoted and dedicated to proper farming as well to be honest. We have to feed people, too.

Its simple. No man likes going to the supermarket. And no woman can park next to another car in carparks. This then allows men to park close to the door as a little reward for having to do the shop, while all the women have to park miles away in there 3 bay slot. This will also make the women wet through as it rains 98% of the time in the UK, which also puts a smile on a mans face, as a lot of women enjoy putting on tight white tops.
