I've noticed how cars in the past peaked in their popularity, then they became totally naff and now we view them as being cool again.

The main contenders for this were the Ford Capri, Vauxhall Nova and the XR3i. All are now gaining respect and being lovingly restored.

Which of todays "naff" cars do you think will become retro cool in 10-20 years time?

Perhaps the Multipla! What about the Mk1 Saxo and Corsas?

i dont think the capri, nova and xr3i have ever been naff cars tbh they have always had a place with car nuts they have become retro cool cause there numbers are getting lower, they where cool cars to start with and how modable they have been over the years

XR3i's are still well naff. Mk1 Saxo's and Corsa's aren't good or different enough to ever be or become cool. Truely naff retro cars are stuff like the 2CV .

not really put and rs engine and a rs kit and they are good :amuse:(but in reality the performance and handling was poor but it was still a cool shape!!)

imo the saxo will get the praise it deserves 20+ years down the line cause in all reality its a cheap, nippy, not to bad looking and good handling car as standard and with a few tweaks is better and when the boyracers have bought up and crashed 90% of them they will become retro

A series metro's & Rover 100's ;)

But then I'm biased! How about the KA?

there are only 2 good thing about the ka
it handles well
and someone managed to put a 200bhp v6 in 1
other than that they are kak!!!

I hate KA's with a passion. But I did drive one not so long ago and I was very impressed by the handling.
I also agree with Herb about the Saxo. Not that I like them but the point he made is how it goes.
I'll nominate the Rover 620 Ti but you all knew I would anyway didn't ya. ;)

the 620ti is a understated car!!! my mate in his whipped an evo 6 around the lanes in great barr and it was the first car i had ever seen booted that you could see the petrol gauge going down as fast as the rev counter was going up :amazed:

but sadly i dont think the ti will make it to retro cool for a few reasons
1, they will run out of gaskets for rovers 1 day:lol:
2, the gear boxes will run out before the cars and parts do!!!
3, they didnt look very cool from day 1 internally/externally

It's only the earlier models that have head gasket problems due to having a cork gasket. Once that is replaced with a metal one it's alot better.;)

Wait, Novas aren't naff anymore? you sure about that? I don't know many people who no longer laugh and take the mick every time they see one, or shake their head or summit.

Capris are cool, didn't realise they ever weren't.

in 20 years time it'll probably be green cars like the g-wizz

Interesting question.................if we knew the answer to that one we would all be buying up today's dogs and storing them!

I reckon the late Rover 75 in V8 form and definately the MG ZT260 will be up there. As for the mundane cars Waynne could be right with the Multipla, it could be the cheap people carrier of yesteryear like the old pug estate was, was it the 505-7 seater?

X Type Jag perhaps.

It amazing how split our opinions are and I think that is what makes it hard to determine what will be cool.

I think any cool car needs to fit this criterior:-
1) It had to be very popular once
2) It needs to be very rare now
3) It must have some unusual or revolutionary spec.

What is your criterior for a retro cool car?

Looking at my criterior I guess we are looking at the MK1 Focus, the A3 (hopefully - Audi's first small family car!), the new Fiat 500 and I hate to say it the older mk1 "New" mini.

I've seen a rally Ka and the dyno print out next to it said 260ish bhp. Not sure what engine was in it though - or at least I can't remember.

Any way, getting back to the original point, I think the way it works is whatever a modern 17 year old person thinks is cool and lusts after, but has to wait until they're 30 before they can afford to buy one; AND most have been written off or scrapped by this time so the prices start to go up on something that was almost wortless because of (potentially) a contined annual scappage discount scheme and high costs of insurance.

Like the Focus RS for example.

Apart from it's everyday utility origins and the numbers in which it's (quite rightly) sold I reckon that Ford's '98 Focus might well have a place in history.

It was the turning point for driving dynamics and driver appeal, accompanied by sound build quality and long term reliability. Hitherto, nothing in the mass market arena offered such a combination. Towards the end of its production run the Ford Escort finally managed to stop being scorned by the motoring press and it's traditional 'Ford baiting'. It was time for a change, and Ford's decision to retire the Escort as a model was wise one.

Vauxhall/Opel retained Astra for the UK market, the car was badged the Opel Kadett in most of Europe. The MkIV Astra was a big improvement over previous Astras, but the Focus, for me, was truly groundbreaking.

For the first time the 'utility' car buyer, the buyer who buys a car as an appliance, designed to serve a purpose and perform a function, had the option to buy something that really shone against all its peers. Not just in terms of cost and dealer support, but something which Mr Average buyer would truly enjoy driving.

Driving dynamics and enjoyment suddenly became de-rigeur in this sector and the benchmark was set for the competition.

Ford cautiously and cleverly exploited the Focus' native brilliance and released a number of high performance models in response to a growing demand in the marketplace. A legend was born.

Even in basic 1.4 CL form the car was hard to ignore. In spite of it's leisurely performance it still had enough on offer to engage those who otherwise had systematically ignored Ford.

Today's Focus still leads the way with the ST and RS models. Nigh on modest Porsche performance for the price of a modest BMW 520i says it all.

And the lesser models are still sublime to drive, having taken the original's supreme authority over the competition and evolved it further.

Perhaps never iconic in style, although it's hardly offensive to behold, it's champion amongst strong, but tardy, competition.

The Focus is, perhaps, the new Golf, which, in itself, was the role model for mid market hatches in the 1980's.

If I were in the market for a new midrange hatch/estate, I'd struggle hard to justify anything else over a Focus. And I'd work valiantly to overcome the desire to buy the Ford. But I'd buy it, having failed to overcome the desire to not do so, simply because it's such a bloody fantastically conceived, designed, and built car.

Rarity maketh not a classic. The Rover Montego is considered a classic by some, on account of its rarity. That's only because few were sold anyway (for obvious reasons - they were rubbish cars). Of those which were sold, most have fallen to bits and been retired (scrapped) long ago.

I know, i've driven 'em.

I'm considering one as a replacement for the deceased P406.

I'm considering lots of options.

Police formal interview took place today re the accident on 24th June.

Let's hope that insurers give me some money soon - I have to get mobile and independently so.

Mate I was gonna say to you that you should look int a Focus as a replacement but I thought you was looking at bigger cars.
