What would be faster?

When the 160k miles engine in my golf mk2 dies (or after say 2/3 years) i'm going to change the engine. Would a vr6 2.8/2.9L or a 1.8L turbo engine from a mk4 golf be faster and what would the difference in speed be?
Also, does anyone have any other suggestions as to what i could put in?
Thanks
Peter
p.s. i might put another engine in and then put the vr6 in a few years after that when there's a chance of me getting insured

Will you be doing this work on a tight budget?

I know a guy called Jason who has put a VR6 engine in a MK2 golf.

Well, what i was planning on doing was getting a vr6 engine that is relatively cheap and decent condition, then spend the next year or something completely stripping and reconditioning it. Then all i'd have to do is take the old engine out and put the new one in.
Depends what you mean by a tight budget... by that time i'll have been out of uni for a while so i should have some money from a job, and i'll also be modding it i expect. I don't know what to do about this one though, i was going to mod it with the current engine but if i take it out, i need new mods too.

I couldn't tell you which engine puts out more power but the bigger V6 will deliver it much better and more smoothly than the smaller turbo'd engine.

I'm guessing that the turbo will come with lower insurance though. I don't know if i should step up to the turbo and step it up again after that, but then i wouldn't really be able to mod it now or with the turbo without losing loads of money once i upgrade. I'll be 21 this month when i get insured on just the standard 1.8 gti, so any ideas as to when insurance might be "affordable" (in the loosest sense of the word :( ) if i were to get a vr6/turbo?

At 25 insurance start to get really cheap. Its worth building up a no claims bonus and protecting it when you get the maximum 4 or 5 years, depending on your insurers scale.

You will need to go with a modded car insurance specialist and typically a car modded to the same performance as a larger engined model will cost more that the larger engined model to cover as many insurance will just refuse a quote.

The 1.8T engines are good for about 300 bhp with a new turbo and a remap.
