What RWD diesels are there

Does anyone know of any Rear Wheel Drive diesels? I have a feeling some of the jags might be but I'm not sure?

I'm pretty sure there aren't many RWD diesels out there and there will probably be more AWD versions about.

Do you think there should be more RWD deisels? With all that Torque on offer it makes sense to my mind.

All Jaguars are RWD with the exception of the X type, which is FWD. With the further exception that some X types use four wheel drive.

All BMWs and MBs are rear wheel drive. No others spring to mind at present.

Look at older cars, then we can take the Volvo 700 and 900 series into account. Ford offered a truly repulsive Sierra 2.3 Diesel and a, marginally less sickening, Granada 2.5.

Overseas you'll find Fiat 131s and 132s with diesel engines as far back as the mid 1970s.

Peugeot's 504 was offered with diesel engines for the domestic market.

I think that RWD is still generally superior to FWD for driving, traction and smoothness but we must bear in mind that FWD does off better interior space.

And FWD is still improving. Remember the savage torque steer the Montego Turbo exhibited with just 150bhp. Ford is now delivering over 300bhp in the FWD Focus RS.

Got the Mercs and Beemers already. The Volvo T5 is FWD, as is the D5 and D6.

Diesel cars are much nicer with RWD as the amount of torque stuffed through the front is just too much to steer the thing properly under hard acceleration. Then factor in the nose heaviness of the diesel engines themselves and you've got a recipe for ploughing understeer. It's surprising that they work as well as they do to be honest.

I have drove the T5 a short distance but i've never really liked Volvo anyway so it was more of a chore than an experience. It was Auto too which made it even more boring.

Yep, missed that one! It uses the Merc 320CDi straight six unit.

Omega, thanks - well spotted. They, too are RWD. The earlier 2.5 BMW sourced inline 6 was better than the in-house 2.2 DTi which followed.

There was never a great diesel Omega but as a car they're massively under-rated in my opinion.

The 24 valve 3.2 V6 petrol is sublime and bullet proof.

I believe that the BMW sourced 2.5 diesel was detuned before it went in GM cars but it can be re-tuned back up again.

That seems to ring a bell. There were 2 versions of it as well - the difference being the intercooler in the TDS which was absent from the TD model.

I used to own a RWD Mercedes W210 E300D(N.A. 3litre Diesel-OM606 engine) One of the finest cars to drive. Sold it only because it was too long for our congested roads, and parking anywhere became a problem, The turbocharged E 300D was, I believe, a much better car than the one I had.
