35 mph in a 30 mph zone... Oh come on my speedo isn't that accurate, nothing. :)

40 mph in a 30 mph zone... Depends where & what time of day. A telling off for open areas & late hours to £20 to £40 depending on how how many cars are parked down the road, how close to a school etc.

75 mph in a 70 mph zone... Same as 35.

80 mph in a 70 mph zone depends on time of day & how much traffic there is, a telling off or £20 fine.

85 mph in a 70 mph zone A poke in the eye, £60 fine plus 1 point. 4 points & £150 on 3rd strike within 12 months.

Parking on a double yellow line... Shot on site. Tow vehicle away £350 to get it back.

Driving whilst just over the legal limit... 6 points £250 fine. Caught twice in 12 months a ban for 2 years.

Driving well over the legal limit... Shot on site or 4 years in prison depending on the mood of the arresting officer.

I think that about wraps it all up for me:smile:

just to get this straight in my mind the majority of people would give a harsher sentance to people parking on double yellows to those doing 40 in a 30 bearing in mind that 30 mph roads are generally where children are!

sorry but i personally think thats pathetic, someone parked on double yellows might cause disruption to the flow of traffic but doing 40 in a 30 and hitting and more than likely killing a child causes DEVASTATION to family of said child

Driving whilst just over the legal limit = who cares?

Words almost fail me with this comment!

'who cares' - how about people who have lost loved ones due to some idiot drink driver thinking they were ok to drive......... it doesnt matter whether you are a little bit or a lot over the limit..... you are still over the limit! less in control of your vehicle and therefore unsafe on the road!

the phrase 'guns dont kill people, people do' goes the same for cars.

If the law in any country had a zero tolerance approach to drink/drug driving the roads would be a hell of a lot safer!

Driving well over the legal limit = £1000 fine + 12 month ban + retest
Driving an untaxed, uninsured and un MOT'd vehicle = £1000 fine + car ceased + 6 points

My general thought process is the fines/penalties should be higher at the lower speeds as they are found where there are pedestrians and where speed can cause more harm.

Doing 75mph on a 70mph motorway isn't exactly going to do any harm.

That said I was doing 150+ down the autobahn last weekend, and I'm still here :)

35 mph in a 30 mph zone: Warning given and small fine
40 mph in a 30 mph zone: 3 points, gpb100 fine
75 mph in a 70 mph zone: ignored
80 mph in a 70 mph zone: warning
85 mph in a 70 mph zone: 3 points and gbp100 fine.
Parking on a double yellow line: car towed and impounded for 3 months
Driving whilst just over the legal limit: 1yr ban, gbp 1000 fine
Driving well over the legal limit: 5yrs ban, 1yr prison sentence, gbp5000 fine - if your income is 25k a year before being court, for every 5k increment over this and extra gbp1000 is added to the fine.
Driving an untaxed, uninsured and un MOT'd vehicle: crushed, 5yr ban, gbp1000 fine

Is there anything you'd like to see especially tough penalities for?
Yes,
ugly people driving nice cars, a ban.

will agree with you in part. around here the 30 limits go on alot further than they need to, in some cases 1/4 mile after the last house even this has next to nothing around it. And theres plans to extend it by another 1/2 mile. i agree however around schools OAP housing etc, where there is vurnable (sp) people then the speeds should be lower than 30 and alot of councils have started the 20 speed around these areas.

I must say that my thinking is in line with 2fasts here as well. I was very interested to read the replies and it kind of confirms a long held suspicion I have had.

I would set harsher limits for speeding in built up areas than on motorways. On a motorway you are on a safer road and if you screw up it is less likely to involve others or be as serious as the same excess speed would be in a build up area.

I note that a lot of us do not feel that speeding should be punished at all and even that speeding is acceptable. I just wonder if this general attitude is the reason why we are seeing national limits dropped to 50mph and other silly low speed limits being introduced.

In some instances a 30mph is too much given current conditions, traffic, other road users and weather. IMHO it is a good driver that recognises this and drops to a lower speed to suit the conditions.

Now if only the fines could take "the conditions" into account. An empty road in the early hours is very different to a busy road in the rush hour so why should both have the same limit and same penalites imposed.

See the new thread "Are speed limits relevent"

35 mph in a 30 mph zone Same as currently - £60 and 3 points

40 mph in a 30 mph zone £120, 6 points

75 mph in a 70 mph zone None - within 10% of the speed limit

80 mph in a 70 mph zone £60, 3 points

85 mph in a 70 mph zone £60, 3 points

Parking on a double yellow line Towed if dangerous + £100; clamped if not + £50

Driving whilst just over the legal limit License revoked, £500

Driving well over the legal limit License revoked, 12 months imprisonment

Driving an untaxed, uninsured and un MOT'd vehicle Fine equivalent to 3 times the cost of the tax+insurance+MOT, license revoked, vehicle confiscated.

That's my opinion. Also the reason that there are so many speed cameras and "traffic calming" measures. Of the two, I really hate traffic calming measures, as they damage vehicles and bodies.

35 mph in a 30 mph zone - £20 fine
40 mph in a 30 mph zone - 5 points, £80 fine
75 mph in a 70 mph zone - Warning
80 mph in a 70 mph zone - £60 fine 3 points
85 mph in a 70 mph zone - 3 points, £80
Parking on a double yellow line - Car towed + £50 release

Driving well over the legal limit - £500 fine + 1 year ban
Driving an untaxed, uninsured and un MOT'd vehicle - Driver banned for 1 year and fined £1000 with the money going into a fun for unisured accident victims.

I don't think it matters how far over the drink drive limit you are, the same penalty should be imposed. Revocation of the licence with a retest no less than six months from the beginning of the revocation. There can't be the fuzzy margin where people think "I'm OK". Don't drink or get a taxi/bus/lift/walk.

A fine to anyone caught without tax, insurance or MoT with a multiplier. Any two cubes the fine. all three is a licence revoker.

Anyone caught driving without a licence has proven themselves untrustworthy and therefore gets a lifetime ban or have a tracker fitted - like the anklets that parolees get to wear - but fitted to their vehicle, at their cost.

Driving is a not a right.

A tough retest should be applied to all banned drivers so they have to earn the right to drive again? What say you all?

Proportional fines for the first five (more lenient for minor breaches)

illegal parking - crush car.
drink drive - slap round the face, followed by £500 fine.
severe drink drive - prison for 100 years, plus forfeit of lifes savings.
being a moron - car confiscated, fine 200% the value of the sum total required to bring the vehicle to roadworthyness (is that a word ?), license revoked, not quite prison worthy, its dangerous, but not to the extent of drink driving.
