I heard someone say they were getting a nitrided crank!

I used to watch Night Rider, but I'm guessing this has nothing do with the show, although a car that jumps in the air when the turbo button is pressed would be really cool!

What on earth is a nitrided crank?

What does it do?

Do you buy them - is it a brand, or is it some kind of finishing method used?

What are the benefits of having a Nitrided crank?

It is treated with Nitrogen rich gas to make the surface smoother and strengthen the metal.

It also helps the metal withstand higher temps and greater friction.

Gears camshafts and cam components valve parts and most other engine components can be nitrided.

Usually Ammonia when added to the hot metal it creates hydrogen and nitrogen. The nitrogen diffuses into the metal surface and builds what we call a nitrided layer.

It can also be done in a salt bath using cyanide salt dipping when at 550 to 570°C

I have also heard of Plasma nitriding using plasma Ions.

Nitrating is a process that hardens a wearing surface for longevity and a crankshaft may need retreating only if the journals have been reground undersize too far to remove damage before reinstalling the crank on oversize bearing slippers to match the undersize journals

Thanks for the info chaps once again, very informative.
