Does anyone have experience of swapping 2.5L NA engine to 1.8T 20V VW/ Audi engine and adapting to fit the 944 transaxle? Thanks for any information

Wow what an interesting project.
The A4 engines are inline, the A3 are transverse. This little fact can make your job a lot easier. You will probably have to fabricate a differential housing/driveshaft to suit. Are you also adding the gearbox from the 1.8T
