No car :(
Hello.

On a recent trip to Coventry I had the pleasure of being given a lift by a friend who drives a 960 Estate (2.5 Manual). He picked me up at night and I was immediately impressed by the condition of his N reg car. It was absolutely spotless outside and looked good, boxy, but good. I have since found out that there were some subtle things he had done, chrome exhaust, clear indicators... lots of little things that all add up to create a classy effect.

When I got in I was greeted with a sort of electric blue glow from the dash and stereo. If you had said to me "electric blue lights with a walnut dash" before I saw it in action I would have cringed and said "tacky" - but somehow it worked really well. The interior was full leather, spotless - again not much done really just a lot of small, subtle things to make the whole experience pleasurable. Central to the journey was the in car entertainment. I have no idea what models and makes his kit was but he had a CD/MP3 unit which was hooked up to his ipod, and an amp and subwoofer. I've been in a lot of cars with bleeding edge sound systems and heard all sorts of music at stupid volumes sound amazing - but this was something else. I know his sound system wasn't very expensive and consisted of a 1000w sub, a 400w amp and a Fusion head unit. Still it wasn't the sound system that made it so impressive, it was the acoustics in the car.

You put the same sound system in a smaller or newer car and it just wouldn't have felt the same.

After one half of the trip I had pretty much decided that "I want one of these".

So I have been looking around for a good example of a car on which to base my humble beginnings. The one I have found is a P reg, manual 940 2.3 Classic LPT in dark blue. This is where I will begin. In a rare stroke of luck I've managed to get a complete sound system that is nearly new and cost over £700 from a desperate seller for £150 which includes a Fusion amp, a 1500w sub and a decent looking MP3/CD/DAB head unit.

A Volvo estate isn't ever going to be a performance car, and that's really not the point. I sort of like to think of it as a house on wheels. Solid, sturdy, dependable and extremely comfortable and personal on the inside. That's what I want, and that's why I'm learning about styling and modification (especially interior).

I've already got loads of ideas and hope to spend some time learning about methods and pick up tips and tricks from this forum.

The overall theme of my design will be subtle (but not subdued), classy (but not antiquated) and comfort/luxury will be the primary goal.

I'm going to have all the seats re-upholstered in soft leather, I'm going to fit this sound system I got, I'm going to replace the coloured lens rear lights with the clear lens ones from the upper end models, and I'm going to get a chrome tail pipe.

Those are definite, the rest though is up in the air. I really like the idea of painting bits of the interior and am going to look for ways to do that, but I am also thinking about other ideas like replacing some of the dash with walnut or similar effect - replacing door panel fabric and so on. Anyone with ideas, tips, tricks suggestions and experience in the area of this type of car please feel free to fire off ideas at me or show me examples.

I'm quite looking forward to getting stuck in.

It should be noted that for now I am going to deal just with the styling (primarily interior but some small external mods too). I don't know much about engines and such and I think performance is something I will probably get into further down the line, but hey, we all start somewhere right?

:)

Edit: The nostalgia part came from the fact that all through growing up my parents always drove big Volvo estates - 740s etc - and I felt very much at home in the very familiar interior of my friend's 960. :)

Hi ViniH and welcome to TorqueCars. You have set a record for the longest and most interesting introductory thread so far.

So your plan is get something a bit retro, modernise it with some subtle styling touches. Sounds good. I'd go for a complete interior retrim, not just the dash. Perhaps some flocking and Alecatara Seats.

We have an article on plastic painting which should be of interest to you http://www.torquecars.com/styling/plastic-painting.php and also this article on dash styling http://www.torquecars.com/styling/dashboard.php ;)

When you are ready to talk engines and power let us know and we will surely have lots to say and suggest.

Hey Waynne, thanks for the reply. I already read the paint thing, in fact I think that was my landing page from Google to get here in the first place.

I am really interested in doing it and think it will be both fun and rewarding. I've been looking at examples on the site and on the net and seen people who have put in new carpets, new door panels, totally re-done the dash, etc.

I am starting to get some big ideas, but yeah essentially to modernise a retro car is a pretty good way to sum up my goal.

I foresee a lot of shopping trips and ebay sprees in my future.

Don't forget your local fabric shops. They usually have a good supply of leathers and other nice finishes which you could use.

(Oh yes, doesn't it always come down to time and money.)

Bad news!

The 940 I had agreed to buy has been sold out from under me. Only found out ten minutes ago and am quite annoyed.

So I now have to find another one to get.

There is a Cross Country 1998 2.4 T SE available for a really good price at the moment - one owner from new, low miles (83k), full service history, etc, and I am really tempted to get it, it looks smart. However I am not sure how much of a project it would be and I do not feel that the car has the same sort of character as the older models. So I have sort of disregarded it as a contender.

My choice is between three models a 960 2.5 Manual - a 940 2.3 Manual or one of the 850 range.

So I am now looking for a bit of advice from the Volvo fans here, which of those three models would you recommend and why?

I love the old 850 T shape and the engine is a real performer. With a few tweaks you have an unbelievable car on your hands.

Out of the 2 you are looking at I would say the 940 has more potential due to the turbo as far as tuning goes.

Right well, to cut a long story short I am now the proud owner of an N reg 850 GLT T5.

Full service history, 176,000 miles, dark blue, rear spoiler, part leather, five 5-spoke Volvo alloys with 4 performance tyres and 1 budget tyre.

Car: £410
Car transport hire: £40
Petrol to collect: £110
Total car cost so far: £560

Bargain? I certainly think so! We'll see what my local Volvo specialist thinks. :)

My first impression is: I love this car. I love the way it looks, I love the colour, I love the comfort, I love the feel of the wheel, I love the way it drives, I love the power, I love all the little features I keep finding, but probably most of all I love the potential it has. I love the ideas that are keeping me awake tonight, the plans I am making for both mechanical upgrades, tuning and also styling. I am going to have a lot of fun with this car, and hopefully learn a thing or two.

I have also decided that a smarter move would be to work on the mechanical side of things first and make sure everything is sound and that I am able to do what I want with it before I start working on tarting it up a bit. :)

So... my plan is to get it to a Volvo dealer and get it a major service, and take it from there. If everything checks out, what are the first things I should look at/do/learn?

Well done. Sounds like you got a real peach there.

First up would be brakes and suspension, get that right and the car will be safe and handle well with more power. You might want to get some wider wheels to handle the power. The standard cars have traction issues when you put your foot down.

Check for uneven tyre wear this could indicate the suspension needs realigning. It becomes worse when you have more power to deal with.

Next up it's time to recondition the engine. This can include some head work, a 3 or 5 angle valve job and some new piston rings. (If the car has been serviced well you won't have to worry about this as much. But you do want the engine in tip top condition for tuning.

Then I'd research turbo upgrade options with associated fuelling requirements and get this done then finish off with a remap.

Lots of really useful help and info there and a good road map for the order in which to do things. Thanks for that.

A little update, I put the car in for MOT yesterday and all it required was an adjustment to the handbrake total cost for MOT + work: £60.

I also got the mechanic to give the car a good looking over - he knows what I intend to do with it, and he was fairly impressed. His jaw nearly hit the floor when I told him how much I had paid for it. The body is in such great condition for it's age, it is mechanically sound and has not been driven hard. It has been serviced every 10k miles for its entire life at Volvo dealership up to 150k and at a non-dealer garage for the last two services.

It has five matching original Volvo five-spoke allows (which I really like) some of them are a little damaged but the garage I know will recondition them for £25 each which seems fairly reasonable.

I asked him for his assessment and if he considered the car suitable for tuning and styling and he said categorically yes. He also suggested that there is no reason why I can't fit the sound system I have immediately, so I let him do that for the paltry sum of £50. It's a fusion FN420 AMP, a 1500w Sony sub and an MP3/CD sony head unit.

I get the car back today, I'll take some photographs tomorrow and start documenting my progress from there.

Edit: My friend, the guy who has the 960 that originally sparked my enthusiasm, recommended putting it into a Volvo dealer for a major service before I do anything else. What do you think of that idea?

A dealers major service will replace a lot of worn pipes etc.. It will cost a lot but would certainly be worth it. They are very very thorough and tuning usually exposes weak spots elsewhere.

I look forward to seeing your pics and progress reports. I have to admit i'm more than a little jealous.

Well you have no need to be jealous any more.

At 8.50am this morning I was performing a u-turn in what I considered a perfectly reasonable place to do so. There was a bend about 250 feet back down the road and a guy in a crappy old S-reg Ford Ka who'd just come off the motorway flew round it at about 60-70mph and as such was unable to stop/swerve enough to avoid smashing into my offside front wing.

If it is not a write off I will be stunned.

£450 excess too. :/

 Oh man that is such bad luck!

Insurance tip: Take photos of the skid marks and location. Back this up with measurements etc.... I reckon you'll have trouble proving blame if he argues you swung out in front of him. Keep me posted.

I've told my insurance company that I consider it about a 60-40 him-me. It wasn't the smartest place to turn, however I took all proper precautions and the reason he hit me was because he was speeding. If he had been travelling at the speed limit he would have had plenty of time to stop.

:( Unfortunately speeding is not a good allegation to make. If its not to late I would alledge instead.

1) The road was clear when I performed the manoever.
2) The Third party failed to keep a proper look out,
3) The Third party failed to drive in a manner that would enable him to stop.
4) The Third party failed to stop his car in a safe manner.
5) The Third party failed to take evasive action in time.
6) My car was stationary or present in the road before the third party came around the bend.

Then state the stopping distance as per the highway code for the road speed you were on. Hopefully the collision occured outside of this accepted stopping distance.

Give them an inch and it will go FULLY against both drivers. There is no such thing as a 50/50 or partial blame. Either 1 wins or you both lose.;)

Hope this helps! Also, only state or alledge what was true at the time of the incident.

Thats your allegation then! You had every right to be parked on the main road. What if you were sunbathing at that point? What about if you had broken down? The other driver was clearly at fault here so by rights his insurers should deal fully with your claim and excess.

I just rang insurance but their systems were down, I will call on Monday to inform them.

Thanks for the advice.

No worries. I see so many innocents being taken advantage of by the insurers who you'd expect take a reasonable view of things without you having to spell it out to them.

FYI: £2700 of damage, they wrote the car off.

I'll post again in a few months when I find another.
