Hi,

I am considering converting my 1.4 8v Volkswagen Polo to a bigger engine, what engine do you think? This would be my first time doing something like this so i would prefer something quite simply but will still give me good results?

cheers

The 16 valve 1.6 unit should go in easily with minimal other changes.

I'm not sure about space for the the 2.0 unit from the MkIII Golf GTi but the 8 valve 2.0 (only about 120bhp) is beautifully flexible and I preferred it to the 16 valve GTi, which, although ultimately quicker, didn't have that effortless go-in-any-gear type of feel.

With low gearing as in the MkIII Golf GTi you could get away with 5th gear as low as 20mph and it would still behave.

The 2.3 V5 is a lovely engine as well, but I seriously doubt it'll fit a Polo.

Over to pgarner - our resident VAG specialist.

And welcome to Torque Cars :)

alright cheers.

What about a 1.8 16v from a Mrk2? or is it hard to get a half decent one of those? How much does it averagely to fit a new engine in? and is theres any other types of engines that fit in a volkwagen?

It depends upon your budget, or your inclination to spend it. I am not a mechanic but we can reasonably assume that using a VAG engine will be easier than using something from another maker.

In general, if we're looking for performance (ie torque and power) then it's cheaper to buy a car which delivers what you want of it in standard tune. Most turbocharged cars, whether petrol or diesel, will respond very well to ECU remapping.

However, if you are after a project then modifying is the way to go - it's just not for me.

Modified cars can cost a fortune to insure, fine if your goal is a one off.

What age is the Polo you're planning to tune?

The 1.8T conversion has been done a few times and makes the most sense to my mind. It can then be tweaked and remapped to 220-300bhp fairly easily.

gah beat me to it :p

what about the leon cupra R engine 225 standard and its still a 1.8T

the problem with the 225 units (TT,S3 and cupra R), AMK and BAM engines, is the price of them people are wanting stupid money for them.

the 1.8t is a way to go for cheap power however you need to have the immobilier switched off otherwise your into a ball ache.

the 2.0 mk3 golf gti engine would probably be the easist swap

Hie everyone, I have a 9N3 with a 1.4L BKY engine belt driven and 4 speed auto gearbox, is it possible to drop in a 1.6L BTS engine chain driven and its associated auto gearbox without alterations?

hie

I do have VW polo 9N3 of 2005 with 1.4L BKY belt driven engine with a 4 speed 001 automatic gearbox with identification code GJG. I did a rebuild on the engine after the timing belt snapped about a year ago and the engine operated well after the rebuild but now the engine is smoking and i have to top a pint of oil once in every fortnight after about 400km. I suspect rings are worn because the smoking increases as i accelerate. So I am thinking of buying another engine but I am thinking of swapping to 1.6L BTS chain driven engine. These are my questions, can you assist
1. Does the BTS engine fits in the engine bay and work with mountings & computer box for the BKY engine?
2. Does the BTS engine fits on a 4 speed 001 automatic gearbox with identification code GJG?
3. BTS are usually associated with 6 speed 09G automatic gearbox so if I am to fit it, does it work with mountings & transmission computer box for the BKY
4. Is BTS engine a better engine
