Does anybody know how similar the vk45 block is to the vk56? I've read in some places they're the same, so I could use the vk56 internals with the 45's vvt system, is that even possible?

The bore stroke and head are all different if I remember rightly. If you view the VK56DE as a stroked version of the VK45 you won't go far wrong.
AFAIK though similar the actual block size is different though with the VK56 having a higher deck height.
