A couple of my friends who have been using 100% veggie oil in their cars both suffered from total engine failure. (Despite my repeated advice not to! The retort was always, It's been ok up till now so it won't be a problem!)

One of them had blocked pretty much the entire fuel line, injectors and fuel filter! (It pays to pay if you know what I mean!)

We used to do this with the Seat 1.9D - rotary pump type engine and it was fine up to 50% until one day the pump seals all collapsed and I was landed with a £400 repair invoice.

Also, even though the govt has relxed duty on biodiesel for up to 2500 litres per year for personal use does not mean that you can bung SVO into your car. SVO is not an acredited biodiesel fuel and as such would still attract road fuel duty.

Only the old diesels (like mine) can run 100% veg oil....aother thing to note is that certian fuel pumps don't liek veg oil (this goes for all diesel cars new and old)
Bosch pumps should be fine....
Lucas and a deffinate no no but will run biodiesel as it is about the same viscoity as petrodiesel

shouldn't put veg oil in a common rail system because it will clog up the injectors..
VAG pd systems work quite well with biodiesel and now VAg recommend using at least a 5% mix with normal diesel because since emmissions laws on diesel becamse tighter diesel has less sulphur in it which is a lubricant so the veg oil kind of makes up for it...and vag will also allow 20% mix without voiding warranty...

o and if you make your own biodiesel...don't put too much meths in it as this will eat your fuel seals....not good for your fuel economy or your wallet

another thing to remember is as well that biodiesel and veg oil aren't very good in winter because on that cold morning your car won't start because your nice farm fresh will have congealed....
best thing for that is a 50/50 mix with nromal diesel or you can buy the additive thats stops it from congealing...

should also note that using biodiesel or vegoil will ruin fuel filters far quicker than normal diesel...expect to repalce every 1000 miles or so....depending on the quality of your fuel/oil

DO NOT USE BIODIESEL OF ANY KIND WITH ENGINES USING THE PARTICLE FILTERS THAT REQUIRE PERIODIC INJECTION OF THE EOLYS ( (c) Rhodia, previously Rhone-Poulenc) ADDITIVE.

It is incompatible with the fuel borne catalyst and will wreck the FAP system in days.

I had to smile at the idea of WVO; waste vegetable oil. Does this mean that you need a primary fuel filter to capture the bits of battered haddock* and the occasional runt-of-the-litter chip? Has anyone tried lard or is its cholesterol content too high?

*Or Mars Bar if in Glasgow

It is certainly filtered. There is also a separate chemical process if you want ot turn the stuff into biodiesel. I'll look it up and post a link to the relevant site when I find one.

No-one picked me up on "pedantrix". I was hoping for some irony there! Ah well! :(

Sounds like a new perversion - maybe a dominatrix who specialises in whipping you every time you make a tiny grammatical error! Now then where's me Borat mankini and something to bite on?

yeah mars bar supper over 1000 calories in one but they were sooooo nice.
started a craze that not long afer you could get everything deep fried -
creme eggs were another nice one

Yuk - can't stand cream eggs. As for calories, cholesterol and saturated fats I'm a bit pragmatic. I prefer to take the stance of eating food you enjoy, which may not always comply with the stupidly over regulated healthy stuff that's forced upon us.

If your diet is balanced and you enjoy what you eat that's got to be good.

Far better than having a nation of anorexics all suffering from various kinds of mental illness as a result of being scared to eat.

It's for this reason that my kids eat ANYTHING. Literally.

I've never subscribed to the chidrens' food/grown up food bit so as a result I have healthy and happy kids who enjoy whatever they're given. There's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned home made steak and kidney pie. Sure, not a low fat meal, and the puffy pastry (which is a b***ard to make, incidentally) is quite high. But you don't have it 7 days a week 52 weeks a year so we need to stop this ridiculous propaganda over ultra low fat, low protein, low salt low sugar everything.

If we start fuelling our cars on cream eggs and mars bars we'll end up spending over £5.00 a day to feed our sweet tooths!

Yup - a little bit of everything does no harm HDi. (I cheat and buy puff pastry from our local butchers cos I've never succeeded with it myself.)

I think that the current definition of obese is silly. Carrying a few extra pounds is not a problem. It's when people carry several dozens of extra pounds that it becomes a health problem. What i was thinking is whether it's possible to 'render' animal fats down and separate the lighter fractions, rather like oil refining separates out all the different 'fractions' of crude.
