Used or new parts

What parts would you be happy to buy used and which ones would you insist are always new?

For me anything that wears, clutch brake system etc would have to be new.

Electronic switches, manifolds and other solid non wearing or minimal wearing parts would best be bought used from a salvage agent.

Engines present a dilemma, I have bought used engines and then had it stripped down and rebuilt rather than working on the current engine, it meant the car was on the road for a bit longer. I guess it depends on the age of the engine and condition.

What are your thoughts on buying new or used? Are you happy to buy used performance parts?

I have used refurbished parts previously. I had a front brake caliper on the 5 series replaced with a Unipart remanufactured item (new seals etc) and it was fine. Supplied in packaging just like a new item for about £50, half the price of a brand new caliper from BMW. In fairness £100 for a caliper the size of a small toaster is not bad.

I think all we can say here is that you need to buy according to condition.

After all, if we buy a used car then we're buying a complete assembly of all used parts!!!
