Hello,

This is my first post so i apologise if the topic has been covered before.

I have an Audi A3 2.0 TDi, I want to make it more powerful but don't want to waste money doing the wrong things.

What upgrades have people done and what gains have they acheived?

Are there and DIY modifications that i can do while i save for specialist jobs?

hey and welcome to the site mate,

more power, how much power? a remap will take it above 170bhp and a shed load of torque - although less than the older 1.9 i still think it makes around 300ftlb.
decat and DPF removal are also good mods as they remove the big restrictions from the exhaust. car will smoke more however.

after that your looking at bigger injectors / nozzels and turbos.
 
ah right.....i think a remap will be first on the list....(are the plug-in tuning boxes any good?)

then the cat and the dpf may be shown the door

Probably best.

One of our members, HDIFun had his Peugeot remapped by Celtic Tuning, and he had an excellent experience with them.

Exact gains are dependent on the engine. The older PD engine is quoted at 201hp and 311ft-lb whereas the newer CR will generate only 195hp but provide 328lb-ft.

Might be an idea to look for the 170hp varients. Both PD and CR are quoted to map to 211hp, and develop 321lb-ft.

A proper map will be more beneficial than a generic map, but obviously it costs a bit more. Bit like the fit of tailored and mass-produced clothing I suppose.
 
I'd give tuning boxes a wide berth, especially so since your car has a DPF. This was the same advice I was given with mine. It was the first car to be DPF equipped in the UK and at the time very little was known about them.

The remap will make a monumetous difference to the torque delivery and performance.

I doubt you'll need upgraded injectors unless you're also upgrading the turbocharger.

Cat and DPF removal will render your car very dirty and attract police attention.

My experience with remapping is limited to that with Celtic Tuning. They do offer a Nationwide service and I would recommend them as a first port of call.

They've been doing this for quite a while now and do specialise in diesel tuning.

When they dealt with my car it was during early 2006. At that time they really only worked on diesel cars. However, the results were superb.

Don't dismiss other tuning companies, but still do have a look at Celtic:-

I've looked at your link and it seems that nearly 200bhp and 330lb/ft are possible.

yes and no.

the 140 was avalible as both PD and CR. the older PD ones didnt get PDF. where as afaik all 170 models were CR.

the swap over depends on the marque and model. some audis used the CR engines as soon as they released the 2.0 where as, off memory, skoda waited till closer to 2007 to swap to them

I'd say yours is the PD mate, which is a better engine for making power!!
