I'm looking to buy an '04-'07 S60R or maybe a V70R in a year or two.

Does anyone have one to tell me about operating costs and headaches?

I know the gas mileage will be poor and the parts are expensive. I guess I'm just wondering how reliable the really expensive bits are. The electric struts and the haldex awd are crazy money, but I don't know how long they will usually last.

Are there other headaches to owning one of these awesome cars?

Well the Haldex AWD system is used on the Saab 9-3 Turbo X and is very very good! I am currently having a specially modified version being created for my own award winning Saab. ;)

So they are pretty durable. How much power can they take before you have to go the specially modified route? From what I have been reading it will be relatively easy for me to get 400+ bhp from an s60R.

The Haldex system is conservatively estimated to be good for 420 BHP, note I said conservatively rated! My baby is running at 700 BHP so no problem at all from the modified version.

Hi
I have had an S60 R for two years now and I love it. No major problems ( fingers crossed) very fast, it has sent a good few BMW and Audi drivers into major depression . Another big asset was in the bad snow we had in the 2010/11 winter. The Volvo just went through the snow without any problems while other people were getting stuck all over the place.
