Hi all. Ive been on the search the last few weeks about the ultimate track car.

Im wanting a car with a lot of power and can be tuned for more fairly easily

A good stock suspension set up

A still good brakes

Ive been looking at all sorts : evos, subarus, mitsubishi FTO and GTO, escort rs turbos, focus st170 and RS ( older shape )

Just wondering what you all think would be the best choice to go for a why?

Thanks

What about a caterham or westfield? Or do you want something a little more practical?

A Mistu Evo would be my sensible suggestion, great handling and really solid performance. Plenty of aftermarket parts are around.

The FTO looks nice but is rather limited by the stock engines, you'd really need to drop in an early evo engine to make one of these interesting.

Well you don't really want something FWD tbh. You won't be able to beat one of the kit-car type things (Westfield, Caterham etc) if you want a track only car. Elise or Exige? At least you won't hate driving them to the track and back as much as something like a Caterham.

well it will be going up and down on the back of a trailer so doesnt matter what its like off the track as long as its good on it :)

I love the huge acceleration and the get flung back in your seat feeling.

I like the look of the FTO. How much would an evo engine swap cost ?

Any other ideas ?

Budget - around 5K would appily spend less if i could get a good deal but if i need a wee bit more then ill have to do that :amuse:

I know someone who tracks an MG ZS180, it as stripped out and pretty quick nasp, out ran many cars with more power due to the excellent handling. He has gone one better and had a professional engine transplant and is now a healthy 300bhp running a 1.8T VW unit. He wiped the floor with the latest Evo, seen the video around Castle Combe, very impressive.

Having done many track days myself, the ones that tend to fly past are the Westfields, Caterhams, well sorted M3s as well. Other than that it'll be the likes of the Exige etc through the twisty bits but on the straights they can be caught unless they have a good engine. In my ZS200 when it was running 190bhp with full interior I was all over the back of a Focus Turbo, I was two up and he was on his own. Alot of it is down to the size of your balls ;) No good having that power and making a total cock of yourself! Start off with a medium car and learn track craft, wring its neck and get the handling set up and decent brakes, also trackday tyres and a swirl pot.
