How would you diagnose the cause of a sticky gear change in first and second gear, particularly when the engine is cold?

Would new gearbox oil help? Do the selectors need adjusting and how would one tell if it was the clutch causing the problem?

Could be any of them. Clutches should self adjust so if that's the cause then there is a fault. However - it's worth getting the gearbox oil changed in the interim - it's a cheap option. Gearbox oil is usually pretty viscous so when cold you are likely to encounter some difficult changes.

Try picking up the clutch in neutral and putting it down again during upchanges - this is double declutching, an old technique. Downchanges this way are more complex.

Yeah, getting the throttle blip timing right can be tricky.
