What are your thoughts on steel wheels? Should they be left alone, painted or have plastic wheel covers put over them?

Some steelies look great painted. Painting them would be better than wheel trims cause thiefs can't nick the paint like they can the trims.

depends on the car they are on, some old skool stuff suit them, mk2 golfs with painted black steelies can look quite nice.

Neither look good in my opinion. But I'd probably go for steelies as trims just hide the steelie.
