Hi

Im thinking of turboing my 1990 EP82 starlet but iv never done this sort of thing before. Can eneyone give help ,hints and tips on turboing please

thanks

We get asked this question a lot so have a look at the thread that pgarner pointed to which covers the basics. I have to admire your ambition though!:D And I hope you pull it off.

Cheap turbos can be purchased from breakers yards which are ideal for a try it and see type project.

Please note that I don't think it is worth adding a turbo to an old car with a small capacity engine. There is nothing stopping you but the money and hassle will just not be worth the power gain you get. It is better to just buy a better car for your tuning project.

An easier option is to just the Starlet turbo engine and do an engine swap.

Adding a turbo is a major engineering task and without a kit with full instructions and all the parts you need there is a big risk of blowing up the engine. Expect to spend 50 hours upwards on a project of this type. This is not the sort of modification you should undertake unless you are mechanically competent and know what you are doing.
It is worth looking at superchargers as these are generally much easier to install than a turbo is.

hi friend, this is just my moderst opinion.
but in an engine like that why you don't put an charger?
it's less expensive and give you an good extra power. anyway, it need an little research but its an process much more easy to make than apply an turbo.

I've got similar issues. I live in Jamaica and while it would be ideal for me to just import an English car, it's against the law to import a car more than 5 years old. I've been searching everywhere for a Turbo Starlet but they all either have a happy owner already or are so heavily modded that I (who has almost no mechanical knowledge), will have no idea how to fix any problem with them.

I thought I could just get around this problem by buying a 4-door non-turbo starlet (in excellent condition from the countryside) and drop a turbo in there, but after doing a lot of reading (and joining this forum), it's looking like that might be too costly and take up too much of my time. Also, I don't have the money for a new engine. It's looking like I might just add a supercharger to the car, can anyone tell me if this is an OKAY idea? How much does it cost and how effective is it? Also would it be stupid to add a blowoff valve to a supercharged engine? I really love the sound of a blowoff.
Please help!

Greetings crazyklayguy and Welcome to our TorqueCars Forum my Friend!
Good to have you along with us :)

The addition of a supercharger will be easier to install compared to a turbocharger, but you will still have to part with quite a bit of money to make that project happen. You have the choice of unit which will depend on the power that your looking for with relation to the room available under the bonnet.
You then have pulleys wheels and belts to work out, sometimes this has meant the loss of an air conditioning pump to create room. Then you have the brackets to be made and they need to be strong enough to take the kick of the supercharger. I could go on but I think you get the idea now. There will also be other modifications required that will need more than a diy enthusiast efforts, mechanics and specialists cost money.

The project can be done but it will take money and some time of the road to achieve completion. To be honest I would either save up for a turbocharged car or the full funds to make the project happen.

Good luck :)

what t9 has said is correct .......unless your car had a turbo version - then you can use all the brackets ,pipes etc off that model and a turbo conversion is worth considering first .
You can also get an idea of the performance gain - in a starlet it is worth doing but stick to a tested set up - any turbo wont do.

In some cases you can just fit all the relevant parts but not always

But even if the parts can be sourced there are quite a few to get :

On top of the complete turbo assembly you would need

Fuel pump and bigger injectors
ecu which will probably just plug in
change the plugs for colder ones
intercooler , again the turbo model parts should fit
You may need to lower the compression ration - (check both models) and fit a metal headgasket.
You will also need a boost controller and gauge

Of course after all the above you will also have to check the brakes etc are up to the extra power
