What do you think companies mean by a Stage 1 tuning part?

This term seems to be overused in pretyt much anything to do with car tuning but does it actually have any real meaning?

What do you associate with each of the tuning stages?

Stage 1 - Strait fit without putting any strain on the car, no other modifications needed. Quite often giving a balance of drivability and performance/handling.

Stage 2 - As above, but on the higher side of OEM tolerances, likely examples include maps that might wear out the clutch quicker than you'd expect, but won't do any turbo/gearbox damage. More performance/handling biased over comfort.

Stage 3 - High performance / very custom. Other modifications usually needed. Not usually suitable for your "daily drive".

Yeah as already said Rob pretty much got it covered. I had a Fiesta Turbo years ago and that was stage 3 tuned and it was a pig to drive at low speeds. It hated sitting at 30mph.

my interpritation,
stage 1 - air filters exhaust brakes light weight bolt on parts
stage 2 - bigger brakes engine remaps maybe turbo add on or bigger turbo sports tyres
stage 3 - cams valves engine boring almost unusable on a road basis.
