st 170 tuning and mods??

hi all,
ive just brought a 54plate focus st170 and was wondering if any of you could recomend any engine mods/tuning tips that i can do with it.the car itself has only done just under 28k in milleage and runs like a dream already...just want to fit some gubbins to the engine and have it interfered with a little !!!:bigsmile:
not to bothered about body and cosmetic mods...just maybe get it lowered by a few millimeters and some lower profiles.any advice will be greatly recieved !!!

really...!!!!??? i had no idea!!! as for budget there isnt one as such,it`ll be ongoing...if that makes any sense??!! but will be looking into it now ive had some advice...although i suppose the first thing i should do is get it on a diagnostic to make sure everything is running properly?? before strapping gubbins on to it!! thanks for the advice turbo...!!!

you should really start by setting a target and working your way up to it.


for a lower budget you can opt for a n/a build and hope to get a bit over 200 bhp with new cams , increased compression ratio , port job and ecu although you should keep in mind that the st170 engine is already pushed pretty hard from the factory and you'll probably find it hard to squeeze more power out of it.


as for the turbo build i think you will also have to think about uprating the brakes and swapping the front axle and diff with rs counterparts as they probably won't be able to handle the increase in power. (That's what i did and the car is still pretty twitchy and i get a lot of torque steering during acceleration)
 
Just to let you know, my mates ST170 engine (in a Mk2 Escort) is 216bhp on bike carbs (R6 IIRC) and Omex. Another 20bhp to be had easily with R1 carbs and a map tweek. Sounds epic, goes like stink. You're looking at about £3k in total. Here:

Please post more details , I'm really curious about the advantages of switching to carbs. Can't you get the same using injection and ITBs ?
 
cool , i would like to know about the intake manifold , was it custom made ?

it would be nice to let us know how much din he pay for the carb kit , FPR , and intake manifold. i would also like to know about the ecu tweaking he did.

why did he choose bike carbs over twin horizontal double barrel ?

Main jets sizes would also be interesting to know.
Sorry for assaulting you with questions but i've heard a lot about bike carbs conversions without knowing of someone to actually do it. Now that i think about it, this could be a nice relatively cheap power gain.

MA - how do you fancy doing a writeup on your mates car? I think it would be a good article on the main site. Dump as much info as you can in here and keep nagging me and I'll put something together.
