hi ive got a jetta 1.8gl 4+E my problem is that the car randomly will idle at 2000rpm when stood still and is also runing on before reving up when i turn it off, recently it has started running on for longer and am worried its goin to run on and destroy its self please any thing anyone could help me with i would appriciate

Is the car fuel injection or carb fed?

Any cold/warm starting issues? When was it last serviced? Does the idle screw need adjusting or is this a "cold" choke based issue?

Thats Pre-ingnition isn't it? When the engine carries on running after it's turned off? Could be worth checking the plugs too.

Try cleaning the Carb.

I had a simalar probolem with my golf, just sprayed some carb cleaner in it ( engine off) let is soak for a bit then start the engine, do this a few times.

not really any cold starting problems just running on ?? :S
