what are peoples views on adjustable shocks for the beetle , are they worth it and is the ride more comfortable once you have arrived at the best adjustment. Any downside?

There the best, I really can't think of a downside, you can do a lot of tweaks to them but make sure you get the ones that are adjustable on the car - it's a pain taking them out to adjust them again. Generally the better looking and lower the car the worse the ride quality. I also recommend GAS shocks.

I put Koni adjustable shocks on my '76 1300 and they were great. I even kept up with my mate's 750 Yamaha on a long down hill road at ridiculous speeds it handled so well (or maybe he was a poor rider?). In any case the handling was fantastic.
