Shell V Power

I own a 1989 Mercedes 420SEL V8 and have for a long time used the 98 Octane V Power by Shell. I have recently found serious problems with black sludge in the exhaust and fumes. My Merc mechanic has said to get away from it and use BP ultimate from now on. I will run the current full tank down to past the reserve light then refill with the BP. Roger, Toowoomba.

Hi Roger, sorry to hear that. I've always found Vpower to be one of the cleanest burning fuels around so am surprised that this could be the cause.

It does sound to me like the car is running rich. I presume you've had it thoroughly checked out, the typical issues are the air sensors and lambda sensor.

Let us know if things are improved after a fuel switch.
