Hi iv got a Rover SD1 v8 with a automatic gearbox both had been sitting in a barn for years, the V8 was very stiff but it's had a good clean and oil put down the spark plug holes and now turns by hand very smoothly, but my question is about the automatic gearbox, as it's been sitting doing nothing could this gearbox have seized up if so will it need stripping down or can I do something similar as I did will the engine???

I would think that the old oil would need to be removed and the gearbox be flushed through if possible then filled with new fluid. If memory serves, I had a Borg Warner box in my old one and it was very fussy about the oil when the autobox was in good condition yet alone old oil standing for years. Not really sure what to suggest for the best, but hopefully someone will be along with a definitive answer for you.

Good luck :)

Nothing to lose by draining and filling with fresh oils, do the same with the torque converter. However the best thing is to get it serviced by a specialist if this is going to become a restored car. I've had a few of these gearboxes on the Rover V8 and can be hit and miss from the spares I used to own. Back then a tenner a box was the norm!

These are fairly sraightfoward 3 speed units so yes, a full fluid change. STS Autos in Aylesbury has a good rep if you are looking for specialist assistance.
