I’m planning a turbo conversion for my 220 GSi, and wondering what engine (and from what donor car) will drop straight in?

Hi Danny

Any 220 - 420 pre bubble shape Turbo engine should drop in (A 620 WILL NOT FIT an 820 will fit if you use your existing engine mounts) - You will also need to change the ECU to a turbo ECU (From the donor car) and every component connected to it ie Air flow meter/ injectors / crank sensor etc.

While the engine is out of the car I strongly recommend a mild reconditioning - at least a clean out of the head and new gasket and preferably new piston rings.

Try Moto-build.com if you need any information this is a modification that they have done a number of times.

Hello you said a 620 turbo engine will not fit and an 820 turbo engine will.
Whats the differents between them.

Mainly the engine mounts (the 800 engine mounts are also different but at least its easy to add them to the 800 block, with the 600 you need to fabricate your own engine mounts!)

I think there are quite a few electrical issues as well.

When I was buying the engine - the seller told me that a 620 is no good.

Since then I have been asking around and researching and the only difference between them is the engine mounts which can easily be swapped over. The 620 gearbox is very different though as it is hydraulic and not cable like the 220 and 420's. So in short I got it wrong - Yes I do admit that I don't know everything!
