Do you think people would drive safely if there were no speed limits on motorways, just a condition to drive at a sensible speed for the prevailing conditions?

Are speed limits the solution to make people drive more carefully?

Does the high cost of fuel slow people up so they drive more economically?

Last weekend I made a trip to neighbouring big town, Southampton. It requires some M27 driving.
I tend to cruise at about 65 (for fuel reasons) and the amount of people who appear to scream past is incredible; the only vehicles I overtake are HGVs.
Everyone is speeding anyway. Except in camera'd areas.

They trialed removing road markings and signs and it did improve the driving standards somewhat. Perhaps no speed limits on some stretches will help drivers relax and concentrate on driving rather than looking at their speedo.
