84' 944 stock
Hello all :)
im new to the forum, but not new to the porsche 944
Just had a few questions regarding my 84 N/A 2.5L stock..
is there performance chips for N/A motors? or even pre 1985.5's?
My 84' has priceless sentimental value so i'd never swap motors or sell it, just seeing if there are any mods i can do?
Also, since i've had it, i havent had to change the battery until recently, and the sticker has been long gone. Anyone know what battery it uses?
Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Most owners fit a 74Ah capacity. do ensure that you get the right height, otherwise your hood (bonnet) may not close properly. The correct height is 175mm. The width is 175mm (with a couple of mm margin), which is pretty standard. And you need to make sure the battery has the right mounting tabs i.e a lip on the bottom edge of the long side, which are also pretty standard.
Performance mods are not that great on the N/A engines. Change the air filter to a performance one like a K&N panel filter. A generic performence chip might give a few horses but a complete remap by a Porsche specialist would be a better gain. Don't expect more then about 10hp at best though but the torque curve is better and throttle response aswell usually. You can also upgrade things like suspension by changing to coilovers for a more sporty ride and a sports muffler for a more sporty sound.
Hope that helps

Good to have you along with us :)

Thanks Andy for the info and T9:D
I've decided to retract my previous statement about swapping motors, I had originally said that because I had helped rebuild the motor and since rebuilding it, it has had no more than 250 miles put on in due to clutch master cylinder failure (which is now fixed). Anyways before I ramble on, my next question is that if I were to buy a turbo motor regardless of what year and size of motor, would it be an exact fit into my body? I have decided I would rather purchase a turbo charged motor and then buy this 340hp kit from Lindsey that I've got my eyes set on, opposed to trying to turbo charge my NA.
Thanks in advance
Josh

Hi, Iv'e been hankering over a 944 for a few years now but just havn't took the plunge, Hopefully a 924S 1988 shall be mine soon. Only read good things about these practical classics. Welcome, Where in the USA are you?

I've never even seen any other old model porsches around OR which is where i live, only my 944 and another one beaten up, and a 928 passing by.
the only 924 951 968 that i have seen is on youtube, haha.
As for reading good things, i dont know what it is with american vehicles, but euro vehicles just seem to age and last better over the years..for instance my master cylinder great about 20 years before it went out..and it was only the rubber O-rings that went bad..all im saying is, if you get that 924S or a 944 in good condition maintenance-wise, she'll last you years. :)

Not seen it done as its far more economical to just get a turbo car to start with. Mechanically you would need to be able to fit the turbo unit and extra pipework in, relocate the radiator, fit the intercooler in, relocate the airbox, relocate the battery to the boot, fit a bigger fuel pump and 3bar FPR. Then you will need to get that all mapped with a stand alone ecu. Then if you're looking at that sort of high power then you will need upgraded suspension, brakes and bigger wheels. You will also need a 3" exhaust and turbo downpipe. Hell of a lot of work and theres probably bits I've missed so basically if you want a fast Porsche, get the turbo se made from 1989 and you will have all of the bits you need already fitted. My turbo se was running 330hp and was epic if a bit twitchy, probably running at its limits without some major suspension work.
Hope that helps ghe decision.

Just thinking about it, if you're going to that trouble a more interesting project would be to drop a Chevy LS1 V8 in which there lots of info on this conversion and is popular in the US

Pre 85 has really limited computer, not much to do. I'm having an 84 built now and it is expensive but I wanted the fastest thing on the road. When it's done it will eat Ferraris, Astons, Audis, basically anything except the 638hp vettes and cars built bigger and lighter then mine.
For more performance, keep your sweet 84 and buy a good turbo car. You'll have less tied up in both then I have in my engine. You'll still get your hot rod ride.
Measure the length, width, and height of the battery and buy the largest cranking power you can get for that size.

One more thing, no the turbo will not fit without lots of modification. The 84 is completely different under the hood because of the inner cooler set up.

Hi There

Ive seen quite a number of 944 porsches in Australia with V6 motors from GM cars. Seen mainly on Ebay every now and then. Will post some pictures if i find them. The Linsey option is looking good to me. I have an 82 944 with 94,000 Ks on the clock. A new stage 3 head and intake will do wonders. You can also setup the computer to take reprogrammed chips.
