A good philosophy to have is when something needs replacing or fixing get a high performance alternative. To be honest you are not going to get much more power out of a 1.4 without turbo but you can make it more fun - induction kit & Sports back box (you will lose bottom end torque though.)
NoS is something you can easily move to another car and would give more power but refills can get expensive.
On an old engine - a good degunk powerboost spray and redex to clean up the internals can get the engine back up to its former glory. Adding a panel air filter will give a little more top end range but not much.
