Plastic engine cover - a necessary evil?

It looks rubbish and now it's got a big crack all the way through the middle. Considering I'm planning getting some uprated leads and hoses and maybe a carbon airbox anyway, do I really need it?

Does if offer any vital protection to the engine underneath? Or is it just to deaden the noise of the diesel engine a bit?

Maybe just to look a bit 'tidier'.

I think the turtle shell covers are there so they don't have to bling it up and make it all shiny ;)
Just check out the RWD 2.5V6 Alfa GTV engine bay:love: now that is how all engine bays should look IMHO
