Hey I've an idea for a paint design for my car, I'd like to have you thoughts on it.

So starting at the back third with matt black
Then fading into gloss black for the middle third
And finally fading into red.

Any thoughts?

Sorry I missed this thread.

It sounds like a good idea but you'll have trouble with fading from matt to gloss. I've seen cars with a sudden transition between the two paint finishes and it works well. I've also seen matt cars with a gloss tribal design over it and that was very effective.

You could achieve this with some vinyl on matt paint.

Personally i think it sounds awful. However, it's about what you like that matters and if that colour scheme floats your boat, go for it. Try it out in photoshop or some other similar programme first so you get a better visual idea as some ideas sound great in the head but in reality don't look so good, it's a damn sight cheaper to adjust a programme than a whole car. Whatever you choose, good luck.

Well there's a lot of work to do on the car before it gets near the paint stage. Starting with a bit of panel beating.
The more I think about it, I'm planning on turning it into a rally/rallycros car so the look of it going around a track would be god awful.

I've learned to just download thousands of pictures from the net of things I like, then short list the ones that jump at me the most into another folder, then from there you'll end up using what you like like the most and that's usually what you'll be happy with the longest. Take your time with the design phase.

dont think you can fade matt to gloss back effectively

Bit to lary for me but whatever floats your boat.

That's a very good method, if you want to use someone elses ideas :) However, I used this method when researching tyres.

With regard to the matt to gloss idea, the fact that opinion on here seems to be that it will be very difficult would spur me on to find a way to do it. Talk to the specialist custom paint sprayers in your area to see what is possible. If they say it can't be done is this because it is impossible or just that they can't, or don't want to, do it?

My explanation of my "effectively"

fading gloss black to gloss red is straight forward
Assuming it is done well the colour takes care of itself and after polishing you get a perfect transition along the car as while the colour changes but the finish does not.
This car can be be laquered or polished to get a perfect finish.

You can do this to a matt finish so I cant see how there could be a transition between the two but you could do matt then gloss black fading to gloss red

That sounds like quite a mission you are thinking of taking on there buddy!
Not quite me I'm afraid but it sounds very ambitious. I would find someone with good photoshop skills to see what it looks like on the PC first.

Don't rush into it and do your research as thoroughly as you can before deciding. I would look into having a chat with a few bodyshops first and see what they think of your idea.

True OG, I'm not very creative so I do this for inspiration or improve on one of my own ideas not necessarily to copy some one elses, but if their ideas are better than mine then so be it.

Totally agree if other peoples' ideas are used as a starting point as there is no point in reinventing the wheel, using the wheel in a different way should be the goal.

Copying only gets you near to the original, be it paint or perfomance mods. To surpass them you have to go your own way.

Think about black to dark, dark maroon to lighter maroon to deep red to bright red.
base coat the red back about 1/3 back then work from front to back to the black.
If you try the matte black, it is the last thing you spray.
