I was wondering how the Model numbers work for Porsche 911. I've heard people speak about a 993 and 998 but they are still a 911.

How do these work, does it relate to the year or something?

The 911 is always badged as a 911 but the following tags were added to differentiate the years.

Porsche 911 (1964–1989)
Porsche 964 (1989–1993)
Porsche 993 (1993–1998)
Porsche 996 (1999–2004)
Porsche 997 (2004–)

Just to add, the 911 - 993 models had the air cooled engines and the 996/997 models have the water cooled engines. The 993 is what the purists want as it's believed to be the best engine performance with the classic air cooled soundtrack:D This is why you can buy a 996 and even some early 997 now for less then a 993:amazed:

It's similar with most Porsche ranges. My 944 had lots of different engine models. My 1989 turbo engine is a 952 but earlier less powerful engines had a 951 code. All the cars were 944's though

BMW do the same with the 3 series having lots of model numbers through the years but they're always known as a 3 series BMW etc

If your're considering getting one then all I can say is go for it, I did and they're grrrrreeeeeaaaaaat
