Nissan Skyline R34

Agreed. Bolt on kits are generally low power increases unless you strip and rebuild the engine. I'd go with an engine swap - there not that hard to find anymore as more and more get wrapped round trees etc...

If you are thinking of economy then I'd go with a big turbo. The lag low down gives you more economy generally speaking. Otherwise a remap will enable you switch between power options but this will not turn the turbo off - it will just turn it down a notch. (Make sure you get a switchable remap!)

like waynne said have a look for the single turbo models normally badged gt-s with the syline

overall produces the same peak power however under the peak the gtr devolps higher due to the smaller turbo increaing power along more of the revs

remember more power = more fuel

RB25 Gtst engine single turbo single vvt R33
RB25 Neo from a gtt single turbo dual VVT R34

the neo has slightly more power than the old gtst engine and also runs gtr rods and solid lifters plus if you want the standard turbos can be rebuilt to run 450bhp with a few supporting mods
