Hi Guys. New to this forum. Am a 66 year old car fan with 19 year old thoughts about cars.
I own a bog standard 2021 Mazda 626 1.8, which is a pretty good nick for the year.
The first time i drove a 626 i realized what an amazing car they are, and have owned a few since my first intro to them.
I'd like to make few subtle mods over time, so looking for advice on tuning.

Hello and a very warm, welcome to TorqueCars from me the admin!

I'm sure you'll fit in just fine and look forward to Talking Cars with you.

I like the sound of this project, we love diversity and respect ALL car projects. I learned to drive in a 1.6 626 but it was a 1983 model.

Cheer's Wayne. No mods as yet, as have been unemployed leading up to my retirement. I don't want to go mad or anything as this is my daily driver, and at my age i like a bit of comfort while driving.:) Would be very happy if i could take it off the road and strip it down to rebuild it better. Subtle mods like engine tweaks, along with suspension, interior. Brakes are very good as standard, and as i am not looking for anything too wild with the engine, they should be ok. Alloy wheels with decent tyres. I recently watched a couple of Torque video's about stage 1 & 2 tune. Would be very happy with any advice anyone may have. Thanks again for the response.

You're a man after my own heart, love driving cars and want the best but nothing too complex or risky. I've got about 20 years before I can think about retiring though!

Suspension mods would make quite a difference to the handling, even just replacing the worn rubber bushings will go a long way to liven up the handling. A strut brace on the front and antiroll bar on the rear are good options if you do lots of heavy cornering, otherwise just a decent set of coilovers and drop it around 20-30mm and you'll be set to go.

Thanks Wayne. Coil overs and a drop sound about right to me. This, mixed with better bushing should make a very nice upgrade and driving experience.

Whalecome to the forum, if you want you can share the engine code of your car so maybe someone can give precise feedback with performance but like obi said, best mod is suspension mod, makes a world of a difference :D

Thank you Torque Junkie. Just realised i made a typing error in my 1st post re what year my car is! It's a 2001, not 2021 as i guess some of you already worked out. VID GF. Engine code FP. The ideal plan is to take Mazda off the road over the Winter and to strip the car down to the shell so i can clean and re paint the underside and engine bay. Clean and paint engine and gear box. Then all suspension etc. I've never done a full strip down, but have always wanted to, so this may be the very first :).

Make sure to buy some boxes and make labels on them as you dismantle things, makes life so much easier as there will be a ton of small parts and other things. Also taking pictures before dismantling is a smart move i've found too many times too late lol
