Audi A4 Avant Quatt
Hi all,

Just recently bought my first Audi. So far has been a bit of an anticlimax after me and my wife being so excited about the purchase.
We have an A4 Avant Quattro. 2.0 Tdi 170 bhp. 2008 old style PD engine I believe.

There are some fantastic guys on here Mike, you have a proverbial mechanical encyclopedia at your disposal |B

Hi and welcome to TC forums.
I have the PD170 engine in my Golf and it goes well. Your A4 being an estate and Quattro probably dulls the performance a bit because of the extra weight. May I suggest a remap. Companies like Quantum or Celtic Tuning have agents all over the UK and for around £200-250 will have that engine up to 210+ hp and 390lbft of torque.

Andy,
Cheers. I've looked into the TDI tuning 'remap' self fitting chip. It takes up to 215bhp and 384Nm torque.
I feel like there's flat spots/turbo lag, especially in 5th n 6th where there's very little pull at all.

I'm having an issue with the at going into limp mode if I happen to be in too high a gear and applying power. ie if slowing to a real slow pace almost to a stop like approaching a junction in 2nd, then just applying power instead of going down to 1st. The car coughs and splutters a little then the glow plug 'coil' steadily flashes and all power is lost. (Limp mode I believe) switching engine off an restarting clears the fault. Independent dealer wasn't 100% sure of the fault code, and says something to do with turbo boost range not met! Surely a car that is that unforgiving with gear selection isn't right.
Would a remap help with this too??

Thanks.

The TDi tuning boxes are essentially a box full of resistors that fool the ecu into thinking the airflow is more and dumps more fuel in. But of a ripoff charging £300 for a 10p resistor. A remap will take into account all sensors and physically change the ecu to work with the sensor information it is being provided. It is a much much better way of doing it and is how the manufacturer would do it.

Cheers for the replies and info Andy.
I'm not much of a piston head really, so although I understand the basics of cars, I may sometimes take things too much at face value from people who I believe are more knowledgable. (ie TDI Tuning) does a full remap affect MOT, insurance etc by much?

MOT no effect but insurance premium depends on your insurer. Most domestic insurers like you find on search sites don't understand them and just use it as an excuse to hike your premium up. Specialist modifier friendly insurers like Sky, Adrian Flux etc wont see a remap as much of an issue

There are some tuning boxes which have computers in them and do more than fool the intake temp reading. These act like piggyback ECU's.

There are so many fake (resistor boxes) around it's given them all a bad name.

Some tuners, like JR Tuning and JF Automotive allow you to have a box which contains 2 or 3 custom maps you can flash yourself to your car. You don't have to take your car in to benefit from this, they send the box, you read your ecu send it to them and they write you a flash file you upload yourself. Please mention TorqueCars when you speak to them as it will encourage them to continue advertising with us.

Just to add Mike, before you get a remap, which you definitely should do, make sure the car is running correctly as it should as standard. This means fully serviced and all faults rectified so that the new map can be the best that it can. Rob at JR Tuning is excellent but I put him in the upper custom remap area, ByteFlash unit will change your ecu software like a remap but as Waynne says you keep the ByteFlash so that you can change to another map like extreme eco or full on track mode. The service is more expensive initially at £400 but you keep the ByteFlash and can use it on the next car. Rob will do a normal retune like Celtic and Quantum but you will need to go to his workplace unlike the others who havea UK network of agents. Some Celtic agents will even come to you at home or work. Whole remap takes about an hour

Absolutely - get the DPF/turbo sorted first.

Diesel remaps are a win win as long as you respect the limits of the mechanics of the car. I've remapped every diesel I've had, and got more power/torque when I need it and better mpg when I'm cruising.

My Bora went from 130bhp/220lb ft to 170/290, and my Focus from 115/180 to 140/220
