MY current capri project

I bought the car in 2002 for £250 and have since spent an ever increasing amount of money on it, a year ago I decided to bite the bullet and as I had made a few contacts and friends in the right circles I booked it in for an engine rebuild but as things went on we found more and more things causing problems (rust mainly) and it turned into a bit of a nightmare. I really have a thing for classic motors so I pushed on and volunteered my services after work and at the weekends. It has been a long road but things are starting to come good and I am hoping to have it all finished for the show at the end of June. Unfortunately I cannot afford a respray and all the work besides so please excuse the mismatching panels.

It did look quite good

Failed the MOT with a two pager :(
Emissions
noise
seatbelt
wheels
leaks
lights
switches
But got them all sorted out and now drivable. Got the usual runnings in issues and found that the timing I had set at 5 degs btdc with vacuum should be 10 degs btdc without vacuum. Sounds much more lively now, but am having trouble with the starter suspect it is an earthing problem and am in the process of fixing. Need to take axle apart to check if diff is lsd or not but am inclinded to leave it for now so I can get out and have some fun. I will try to put up new vids this week have one from before timing was done and need to get one when it is sorted and back together.
Don't you just LOVE projects just when you think you can relax and it's on the road that's when it hits you with all sorts of new and exciting problems :)

Do a good old fashioned wheelspin.
From a standstill turn the wheel and do a wheelspin.
If it's lsd the both wheels should break traction more or less at the same time.
If no lsd then only one wheel will spin. ;)

Well did a hard launch from the lights and it kicked the back end across to one side and just tore of down the road. I am getting more convinced it has got lsd but not sure what oil is in there have the feeling ep90 was put in as was all I had. Think that might be the cause of the lsd interuption. But again to drain I have to take axle apart as no drain plug so will leave for now and just have a laugh.

Will the ep90 be safe to leave in the diff, if there is even the smallest doubt then I would replace it. LSD's are not cheap so I would protect it as best I could - if it was me that is ;)
After all that you have been through I would hate to see anything bad happen to this project, especially as you seem to be moving along quite nicely now :)

Well I do have hauser racing lined up to put in a torque thrust lsd into the diff loader if I find it doesnt have a lsd or to rebuild it if I do have one. That is gonna cost me about £700 either way. I know I should get it apart and checked but after everything that has gone on with this car can anyone really blame me for using it as much as I can whilst I can?

No under the circumstances I can understand the need to get some fun out of it :)

If I do take it apart does antone on here know what sort of oil SHOULD be in a lsd? And does it depend on the type of lsd?

You could try sending a PM to oilman and asking the question, best placed person to give sound advice on this one I think ;)

Got the second half of the carb working now. Now it lights the tyres in the first three nearly four gears. Only one and a bit to go :p

lovely, my dad would certainly think so. He used to have this car in his younger days :D 2.8i i believe

keep up with the hard work, even though its probably going to cost alot more than its worth!

Anyone who worries about the value of the car in proportion to the money spent on the car, has no place on this website :) This is all about the love and creating something that cannot be bought anywhere else and that is totally unique and individual to you! Now that is priceless ;)

Damn right. Have since invested in a new carb and now under full load it smokes out of one side of the exhaust. (AHHHHHHHHRGH) However went to an american car show at the weekend and got a few ideas on how things should fit. THere is also a video one of my customers sent me up on youtube (yes thats right folks my car is now famous) search for, capri v8 roaring, and it will come up. Hoping to get things running again so I can go to the custom car show at catsfield this sunday. Fingers crossed.

Love the Capri here are a couple of others with big Power.

Both friends the Cossie powered one recently ran 180mph at Brunters but now in for more Power. The other has enough Power :amuse:.

Top video made 776bhp/693ft-lb on RR that day 7 litre V8
2nd video made 503bhp/ 485ft-lb 2 lite Cosworth powered

Had a fettle with the carb at the weekend took it into work to check emissions due to age for mot i am allowed 4.5% co at idle tested found that it was 0.28% and 0.79% left and right banks respectively. No wonder it doesnt like pulling away after being sat in traffic. Set now to 2.8-2.9% on both sides goes much better now. Had a quote for making a manifold back system from a specialist near heathrow any guesses how much?

The only two people near Heathrow I can think of are Profusion Customs and of course the legendary Simpson Race Exhaust. The 1st will want an arm and a leg to do the job, the 2nd will want all your limbs plus a blank signed and dated cheque :amuse: Any of these? :)

little place called edwards motorsports in west drayton, not too far from heathrow.
fella builds space frame cars for a living so knows his way around a welder and did a good job on my mondeo exhaust given my limited budget and not a very good base to work from...

Well T9 at 1200 quid i won't be getting into their gallery. Will probably rebuild the system when i take of the road next month. Gonna get an lsd and get the axle rebuilt. Might invest in some new springs as under hard braking does wallow around rather than sitting solid on the road.

right well leading up to the end of the month when the tax runs out got a final quick check over at work today then hopefully going to the old skool ford show tomorrow at the BA wingspan in crawley.
Got a few leads to follow up with regards to lsd/axle rebuild. I need to redesign the gearbox mount, exhaust, fan shrowd and build a engine steady bar to reduce engine rock. Fun fun fun

Just in case you haven't sorted this:

Ask the LSD manufacturer, as they may recommmend a particular oil or a standard AQF. For example, my ATB diff from Quaiffe uses the same oil as the original Cosworth diff.

I may have found out why the starter motor intermittently doesnt work. Turns out I may have an automatic starter motor rather than a manual one. I will spend this evening crawling about pulling the starter motor off. YAY :(

I was not aware that there was a difference in starter motors apart from size :embarrest: Let us know how you get on buddy, maybe together we can prevent someone from making a similar mistake ;)

why should they not suffer as i have muhahaha.
Ordered the new starter should see it tomorro hopefully that will work and make it usable. The automatic starter has teeth exposed past mounting point as ring gear is on gearbox side of flywheel. Manual ring gear is on engine side of flywheel and the teeth are sunk into mounting point and not visable. I have found out now lol

Hi all sorry i havent been about been mega busy at work recently so havent had much time to do anything else much.
Well the tax on the Capri has finally run out so there is my six months of running in done now time to start fettling again.

I have ripped out the axle and have stripped in into its component parts and have had a few bits done. I have had the casing powder coated in satin black which looks much better in my opinion than the hammerite it had before.

AFTER

I have had both of the driceshaft bearings replaced as only one had been replaced previously and I want to build in some reliability where I can. I have ordered a true track limited slip differential for it as I laid a 33 yard number 1 the last time i put my foot down and would like to turn it all the way up to 11 :)

After giving up on the idea of paying £1200 to have someone build me an exhaust system I have decided to do it myself as you can see I have a couple of pieces to go round the tank ( Ford puritans stop reading now!) they are Golf centre boxes took an old one off and went "Hmmmm I wonder?" and it did. I also rescued a couple of sainless tailpipes from a honda civic backbox which should look okay.

They may need to be cut down a bit though.

Will try to keep up to date with progress as it goes on. Need to put axle tube back in for now to test clearance for exhaust and am planning to run new fuel and brake lines inside the car under the carpet to back it a bit cleaner along with a battery cutoff switch. I also had the bumpers and brackets powder coated and have fitted an FIA tow eye for good measure.

i am keeping myself busy whilst the axle is out developing an electric window mech for the drivers window. YES there is a kit available to fit elec windows but wheres the fun in using something you know works?
