Looking for suggestions and ideas for ways to increase horsepower on my 97 Corolla with a 1.6 but not sacraficing any gas mileage.

Hi TorqueWrench and welcome to TorqueCars. Its always a difficult balance between power and HP. Your aim is to make the engine more efficient. One of the best ways of doing this is to get the head gas flowed and ported. A panel air filter will also help a little with top end power without sacrificing MPG - it might even improve it a little.

Have you read our article on tuning for MPG - it might give you some pointers on the economy side http://www.torquecars.com/tuning/tuning-mpg.php.

Always get the wheel bearings checked and wheel alignment. Run at the correct tyre pressure.

Weight reduction will also improve your power/handling effectively and increase your mpg. Take out the spare and get recovery membership just in case.
