Mk4 Engine Size

Just out of curiosity, what details would you need to find out what is the biggest engine you could fit in a Mk4 Golf.

you could pretty much get any engine you wanted in. the only restrictions would be your mechanical knowledge or your bank balance

biggest that can be fitted as a straight swap would be the 3.2 from the R32 or TT, but it must be Mk4 golf or Mk1 TT as the later models have a different setup with the FSI.

have seen the 2.7 twin turbo from the old S4 fitted into the A3 (which is 90% a golf in drag ) however it did have the 4motion converted into a real quattro.

Thanks for the info. why has the FSI restricted it to only those types of r32 and tt.

the FSI became more common when they swapped to the MK5.
the ECU is set up differently and doesnt have a return line for the fuel also the ECUs are harder to code

basically when you swap the engine on the Mk4 you need to have the keys, ECU and instrument clocks matched with the imobilliser codes. this is starting to apper to be a problem with the newer engines as the clocks and ECUs are harder to backwards code. of course you could allways go stand alone

the FSI is now avalible on the 1.4 TFSI 1.6FSI 1.8TFSI 2.0TFSI and 3.2FSI
