hi guys , i recently brought myself a mk2 driver for my first car ( being 19 cheaper insurance than a gti) and am having trouble with reverse gear , well it dont have one , any ideas ??

howdo.

We might need more info.

Does the gear lever go into the slot for reverse but nothing happens when you release the clutch, or can you not get the lever into the slot at all?

it goes into what feels like reverse , but when you let the clutch off its actually first gear

Ok - and I'm not being funny - but is there a ring on the gearstick you have to pull up before you can get to reverse? Trying to remember what my Bora had.

If you're sure it should be in reverse but isnt then it could well be loose gear linkages. Difficulty getting into slot is usually bent selectors, but if it basically goes into the wrong gear then the linakges are loose, or bushes worn so the stick isnt going where it should. There is a way to realign but it might need a specialist tool.

Do all the other gears line up right? Can you get 5th, all the way to the right?

Is it hard to engage first or second gear? Does the clutch slip when you accelerate hard? Reverse and 1st are generally the first gears to have trouble when the clutch starts to go.

Check the gear selectors on the gearbox are all in the correct positions, tightly seated and without excessive play. If someone moves the gearstick in the car you'll see which positions the rods need to be in for reverse, then try to manually put the box into first pressing the selector levers.

That gave me an idea, you might just need to press down on the gearstick to get through the reverse gate!

its not that as i had reverse working before ,

i had thought it was the bushes , and have been looking at getting them done,

and yeah i get 5th gear

1st & 2nd gear was difficult to get into untill my reverse gave up now all gears work fine if im moving forwards :')

Hi and welcome.

Maybe be a better idea to sort out the suspension first, it seems to have collapsed.

:)

I didn't think it looked very well!

Apologies, tmk2p, but you will get used to our warped senses of humour. Any progress on the gear lever problem?

I take it that the lever isn't getting restricted by anything? A friend couldn't get reverse in his Hillman Imp. I had a look and noticed that the seat was stopping it engaging the gear! The linkage joints were so worn the lever hit the seat before the gear was engaged :) Moving the seat back solved the problem until he could repair the linkage. However, this is unlikely on the short linkages you have.
