Has anyone heard about mixing Maxol E5 and Maxol E85 at a ratio of 5 to 1 giving you nearly 100 octane petrol. We only have 95 octane in the pumps over here so this would be an ideal solution if it actually works
Thanks

Mixing petrol is very dangerous. It is extremly volatile - the slightest spark and the whole thing goes up. So don't try mixing up a vat of it at home.

You might have thought of mixing it by putting it into your tank in the correct ratios but you will end up with an uneven mix unless you shake the cars tank thoroughly:eek:.

Chemically speaking it probably would work but it would be hard to predict the resulting octane of the mix. The chemical make up of fuel is complex and the octane rating is soley a "restistance to knock". If the knock scale is linear then this might work on a mixed ratio basis but I'm not sure it is a linear scale.

If your car takes high octance and low octance fuel then there will be an amount left over in the tank when you fill up with the other fuel type so in this case it is ok.

See www.torquecars.com/articles/fuel-octane-ratings.php for more info on how octane is measured.

Octane boosting additives do work provided that your car has cylinder at a time knock detection and correction (whereby it will automatically advance as far as possible under all conditions until it's just short of the point where combustion starts too early), or you advance the ignition timing throughout the rev/load range either mechanically or electronically.

As Waynne says, petrol is very volatile and the vapour flashpoint is very low.

The best, and safest way, to mix is in the tank itself. Stick the additive in first and then fill with your favourite brand of petrol. This ensures thorough mixing.
