Max speed signs

On bends you sometimes see a sign that says max speed 40 mph.

Is this a legally enforcable limit? I'm guessing it is not but I'm pretty sure if you came off the road and the evidence pointed to excessive speed you'd probably be had for dangerous driving or reckless driving.

Do you think these "bend limits" are enforcable? If not should they be?

They're not enforceable. The only enforceable limit is one posted in a white circle with a red border.

Whether or not there's a max speed advisory for a bend you are still likely to get rattled for driving without due C & A if you leave the road through excessive speed.

Agree with Hdi here but what about if your on a motorway and passing through a variable speed limit section and then come across said sign?

The variable speed limit itself is enforceable. The other ones aren't.
