Is there much difference in using a franchised main dealer or an independent garage when you get your car serviced?

Cost wise there is not much in it now days. I personally think that main dealers are more thorough and know what to look out for.

They will also perform software upgrades and checks which I doubt my local garage would be able to do.

Has prices for a major service (80k FWD TD auto) from 4 dealers ranging from $870.00 to $1200 I was dumfounded that the dealership that sold me the car could be app 45% dearer, no wonder why we call them stealerships over here.

Bit of a daft question really. Depends upon the indie in question and the car you're entrusting them with.

Wouldn't take a Saab to an independent VW specialist anymore than I'd take a Saab to a VW/Audi main dealer

:-D

I do most servicing my self. Some big jobs, I leave to my mechanic, Mick. Lovely guy and worked for Rover for 15 years and has owned his own Rover garage. So I trust him with my car!

I think for premium/luxury/sports car segment it is better to go to the authorized workshops. There are many service bulletins, upgradation & software informations which is updated in the workshops on a daily basis, which may not be known to the indipendent technicians. In our cities it is very difficult to get genuine parts outside the dealerships as it is not sold by the manufacturer to the individuals.
