Do you prefer the Japanese style of modding cars or the Euro look? JDM helped make modifying a car what it is today, with the huge body kits and even bigger rims creating a very sporty look. Flashy paint jobs and carbon fibre bonnets were also taken from the Jap style of modding, but in recent years car styling has taken a swing towards to the Euro look. Smoothed over body work, de-badged and air bag suspension are essential.

Jap Style

Euro Look

Personally I prefer the Jap look as it's more showy which is my kind of style. However it also depends on the car you're styling. But what does everyone else think?

hummmm....... euro look does look good. but i have to go towards jap styling. but, nothing over the top, subtle styling nothing like rude boy racers where they just get the biggest bodykit that will fit to the car.

depends on the car.
for the bora id def go euro spec. standard with a few subtle body mods, different wheels lower suspension, debadged and smooth bodywork.

where as when i had the civic and the 'lude i was thinking i want this to be as mad i a could.

overall i perfer the euro look. it looks more stealthy over the jap in your face

I am kind of in between. Body kit that's not too flashy, subtle air wents and scoops and nice rims. Personally I like the american muscle look best but in this one I'm going to go with not quite jap but a little bit more to that side than the euro

euro all the way love the low and smooth look and not really a fan of kits to big for the car or stupid graphics stuck all over the place

jap i think, thats the way im going on my astra anyway, the more show like and the more heads in turns the better.

this is something ive always debated with myself, ive had gti s and honda sirs, glanzas and am currently driving a legacy b4,but ive owned 1 mk1 golf,4 mk2 `s,two mk3`s,and audi ,and have a mk2 2 in the garage and to get a 944 and e30 eventually and the list goes on.

im half german therfor i thinkk its in my blood to love german cars andd the euro style,i think its the best for quality, origionality and pure class, thers no other look like euro its the best in the world its much higher quality than jap plastic bodys and big flashy wheels but you have to give it the japs cause when its comes to driving through town on a friday night under the club lights and past all the birds theres nothing quite like a pearl shiny jap sharp looking car.

they certainly look racier and i cant help but givr=e yhe japs credit, the reason i drive them for everyday is if i wanted 300 horsys in an every day car with air con and all the goodies in a gaerman car youd be looking at a top notch 3.0 audi or beemer or r32,30000 euro (eh no thanks) and another 2000 on road tax and then thers the mpg dont even wanna start.

you have to give the japs credit for giving us tonnes of power out of 2.0 and throwing in all the goodies like air con all elec etc for cheap, cause thats what there good at ,mass producing stuff quikly and cheap.

BUT I ALWAYS SAY TO PEOPLE,IF YOU HAD A THIRTY YEAR OLD GOLF OR MERCEDES AS AN EVERY DAY CAR IT WUDNT LOOK HALF BAD UNLESS YOU LIVE BY THE SEA AND NEVER WASHED IT) WITH A QUICK WAX AND U CAN BE SURE ITS STILL GOES AND WILL FOR ANOTHER THIRTY CAUSE ITS A HEAVY SOLID GERMAN TANK,AND INSTEAD OF PLASTIC BITS EVERYWHERE THE GERMANS PUT STEEL AND CHROMES GRILLS AND BADGES,WHERES IF YOU HAD A THIRTY YEAR OLD TOYOTA STARLET OR CAMRY(UNESS ITS BEEN IN AN AIR TIGHT TEMP CONTROLLED SHED FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS)YOU CAN BET IT LOOKS LIKE #!#!#!#! AND MOST OF THEM ARE RUSTING IN SCRAP YARDS UNFORTUNATLY,

while lads in europe re still driving round in 30 year old euro golfs and beemers etc which would pull up beside a 10 year old bodykit riddled civic or starlet and still put it to shame therefore i think ud have to agree the euro look simpily oozes quality and class far ahead of its time and with ever growing american scene as proof i think theres no beating euro style its just far superior in every way.

(anyway we all know the japs stole bmw blueprints for vanos back in the day and drove a beemer of the nurburgring onto a plane to japan, all there ideas come from german cars they just find a cheaper quicker way to mass produce it for the market,id do it myself)

I prefer the street sleeper look of euro myself, understated and can hide something special. Jap styling shouts 'look at me I look quick' in essence some are still stock with a bodykit slapped on.

To me if you have a bodykit you should have the tools to back it up, but that is just my opinion.

DanKingb4...I have to disagree. The Euro look is far too generic, every car done euro has the same mods done. Lowered on air bags, smoothed over, the same 15 inch rims and a 'I'm just gonna blend in' paint job. Don't get me wrong, I do like the Euro look, and if I owned an Audi or VW then I'd go down that route, but JDM styling can be done much more unique way. Personally I am taking my Civic down the JDM route but it also pains me I can't start with performance instead of cosmetics (for insurance reasons).

Another point for you DanKingb4...That 30 year old Jap car will still be running, anything else probably won't be.

Now I have to disagree. You can have euro and be individual. Not everyone goes down the air bag route. I know plenty on euro inspired cars that are all unique in there own way. Euro is about subtlety and that means the finer details so 1 car may look the same from a distance but go closer and investigate and most of them will be very different...:D
An also there will be plenty of english built cars still running in 30 years time...;):D:D:D

you see prince this is exactly what euro style wants you think (they all look the same)but as turbo nutter said its the subtle mods that count and i can tell u now that no two euro style cars in the world are the samebecause when you get an idea from another euro style car u always tweak it slightly different thats what make them unique and origional.and ull find most of them have been custom fabricated shells in some shed entirely hand built(unique)an as for the air bag thing nonsense most of them are hydrolic, coilovers or jst cut and dropped.and as for jap cars they do look great but if anything they all look the same all u can do is order a diffrernt bodykit than your mates civic.civic great car but there plastic and sure theyll be running in 30 years, the engine will be fine nut my god will the body and interrior look like crap.what civic do you have,i had 1.6 saloon vti, vtec is great!

your right turbo nutter jags and old escorts are classics and quality built, and will be running in 30 years from noe,id love a jenson intercepter(54 pumps of the pedal to get some fuel up to the engine!insane!!!

of course thats allowed, ive been a hugefan of anything even remotaly euro since i was a kid and yet im driving a subaru, souly because id be paying tousands more with a german car, thers nothing like jap efficiency as an everyday car,as good as german cars are there like a pet they need constant battention.

of course if anything thats one step ahead as youd have british car,jap tuned and euro styled.have you ever seen that maniac lepo on that show chop shop.sometimes i wanna pulll my hair out watching that,i never got sick over the couch when i watched him chop up a beutiful dolphin grey mk2 gti for jonny vegas.what the #!#!#!#! was he thinking!!!!!!!!!!!! fair play to the lads for doing the whole scoody drive conversion,BUT HE SHOULD HAVE LEFT IT AT THAT!!!!!!!! eveerybody dreams of a mk2 golf with scooby engine.HES A BUTTCHER!! AND THE FUNNY PART IS HE CALLS IT ART!!!!!!!!!!!!

actually i was thinking of doing a jap style backbox on my euro m2,usually they just have a twin sqaure outlet backbox or twin round on the euros,or commonly jst a bent up polished piece of pipe sticking out the back and no bachcox showing, but theres a backbox called the imola on the volksbits site that i wnt on the mk2,its jst a round short bkbx with a long round outlet single pipe that would look drag racy in the "pointing up at an angle" jap style.

Bodykits can easily be modified and made different from others. Bodykits designed for certain cars can also be customised to fit a completely different car. The interior on Jap cars tend to suck, however...not really a problem if you intend to mod it. Why would the body look like crap? Maintaining a vehicle and keeping it in good condition is no problem. AS for the interior, 30 years of sitting on your living room sofa will leave it looking like crap, nevermind your car seats! But that's nothing a quick re-trim can't cure.

I drive a Civic Coupe 1.6 (D series engine), I plan to stick a K20A engine in there though.

It's all about personal taste really. Whilst I love JDM styling, others clearly prefer Euro styling. It also depends on what car you have.

Mines neither jap nor euro, don't really go for the low smoothed look and the I don't like the jap body kits. Certainly won't be going for the rat look.
Spose mine could be the stealth look????

Yeah loads of people go for the stealth look, i think its just down to the individual, what look is this car?

lovely astra,my mother has the exact same one as that but its the 1.8 16valve eco tech engine, very rare only a handful of that model and engine in irerland, nice and nippy, black, lovely sports seats, white but not too racy unfortunately shes had lots of problems with ecu etc, clutch elecs,i dont think shell go astra again but really like yours, what engine????

yes prince but the jap cars have a tendency to go much more tatty than solid built germans cars and it is personal preferfence but thats a proven fact

This arguement is going on too long,i dont know how anyone can possibly argue this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Theres no question that euro is classier, more quality,is more origional, more unusual, more creative,a work of art,can anybody else with a euro ca rback me up<where are you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some people have trouble with astras some don't. I've never had any with mine, and its a T reg, so its getting on a bit, hopefully selling it soon though, i want a newer faster car. Back to the question though its the 1.6 version. yeah its nice and nippy, and the sports interior is really nice aswell.

Anyone with a Euro stlyed car will argue for Euro, but anyone with a Jap car will argue that Jap styling is better. We all have our own opinions on this. But once you go Jap, you don't go back. :D

I saw a euro styled golf the other day, I take back that I didn't really go for the euro look , it was lovely.
Everything blended in well, was quite subtle but had some very mods, loved the colour coded wheels.
Would have took a pic but i was driving.

Nope i dont agree with that mate, ive seen a few euro styled jap cars and they look stunning,
allmost all euro cars suit the smooth euro look
whereas most euros look terrible with jap styling

again this all comes down to personal taste

now me personally i like most cars and most styles and i actually like jap car styling as standard (on most of there cars) and honestly believe they are not improved at all by sticking kits on them way to big for the car, graphics of any sort now this is what i believe to be jap styling (correct me if im wrong) but picking up on what pgarner said can be vastly improved by smoothing but cant go with the small 13" alloys 15" is minimum on jap styling imo
now euro cars are vastly improved by minimalistic touches, smoothing and yet again picking up what pgarner said could never be improved by the jap styling big kits, graphics

so in conclusion imo euro style is far better than jap style

and also mate think you need to change your last sentence if you are a jap nut cause the way im reading it you are saying jap is crap

Well you're reading it wrong . You know the saying, but I'm not repeating it on here.

Unfortunately though, Jap styling has been made to look bad by a lot of people who bolt on a huge body kit onto a 1.0L Corsa. When people just put stickers onto their car for no reason then that's more of an immitation of Jap styling. For example, true Jap styling will only have a HKS sticker if HKS products have been used. If not then it just looks stupid. Myself, I have a sticker showing who does the work on my car, and what car club I'm affiliated with.

Candy apple red paint, a carbon fibre bonnet and black rims is very JDM. Exactly what I want.

mate im not reading it wrong at all you are saying jap is crap :toung: but i do know what you mean ;)

you are a jap style fan please define jap styling for me please if i have got it wrong in my brief description above :)

and imo i would associate any candy apple paint more with american custom than jap styling, carbon yes i associate that with jap style more that any other style, and black rims you cant associate them to 1 particular style they have been around for years mate
