Is Gas flow Cylinder head the way to go for solid power gains?

Looking to get solid straight line power from A3 1.8T Quattro. Is GFCH the best way to go? or is it not essential? my only worry is to get to the point where it needs doing to get higher end power gains once all other mods are done, turbo, intercooler, remaps, exhaust etc. also would it make the risks of engine breakdown less or more likely? what are the cost to benefit ratio etc?

I know its pretty opinionated stuff but any advice is appreciated,

cheers guys

On the 1.8T you should get a 5 angle valve job done and go with a +1 on the exhaust ports. CNC cylinder heads have some good set ups and options on this head.

If you want bear minimum mods then uprate the turbo, add a remap and intercooler. The car should remain perfectly reliable up to around 300bhp.

Cost to benefit is small compared to the more basic mods such as remap, turbo, exhaust etc etc. These engines never really make good numbers with basic mods.

so go with the remap, turbo, intercooler, exhaust etc, then gas flow heads if i want more bhp? is it perfectly do-able AFTER all these mods?

I don't see why not, but you might want to get the remap redone to take into account the flowed head.

If you are considering some gas flow head work, then have everything done first and then have one proper map done to take into account all of the hard wear fitted. Although you will see some additional bhp with the head work, it may not be truly noticeable after you have the 2nd remap done - you will feel disappointed after spending the extra money without much noticeable performance to show for it.

Agree with MA, the heads flow well as standard.

whats you ultimate aim ? if you were looking around 600+ bhp then yeah it might help then but to be honest not really needed

I don't know what the stages are as every company uses different "stages". Ignoring stages, the above sounds like a good plan. I'm far from a specialist on these engines but maybe think about adding an uprated recirc and perhaps inlet and boost hoses. I'm sure pgarner will put me right and be be able to tell you what sort of power you're looking at.

Reyland have done some tuning work on the 1.8T. From what I have heard an important mod is to uprate the water pump to avoid disaster!

If your wanting to go for decent power then dont bother with the K04 as the work to fit it is just as much to fit a decent turbo

MA is right, uprated recirc valve should be one of the 1st things done.
if your starting to run decent boost then change the intake pipe as it colapses under heavy boost. decide on what turbo your wanting 1st though as they are different sizes.
the exhaust flows pretty well cat back wise its the downpipe and cat thats the problem

with what youve said youd be looking around 270ish bhp with what youve put above
