Thinking of fitting an induction kit or a panal air filter to my 1004 civic sport (1.6 vtec) In particular iv been looking at pipercross viper and k&n typhoon induction kits. Is it worth doing either of these when the rest of the engine is standard? Could i do both?

If you're thinking of uprating the airflow then I'd probably recommend spending the extra on either a Japanese or American brand intake (like AEM or Spoon). Have a look at funkypower.com or Hond-r.com who are Japanese car tuning specialists.

If you're planning on improving airflow into the engine, then you might also want to think about improving airflow out as well to balance it out. You will get an increase in power and torque at certain points of the rev range with the induction but coupled with an exhaust system it would be more effective and more noticeable.

The panel air filter helps throughout the rev range wheras an induction kit will tend to move the entire power band higher up. On the 1.6 Civic which are already high revving engines I think you will find it hard to live with an induction kit as the loss of low down power will be really frustrating. BLN is right that airflow out of the engine is just as important. You are better off getting a better flowing intake manifold if it power gains you are after.

Hi I know this is old Andrew2487 but I have just fitted a K&N Typhoon induction kit 1008 TB to my 04 Honda civic 1.6 VTEC sport and it is fantastic, grate sound and response through the rev range so I am happy, but it cost me £300.

(Threads never go out of date here! The makes and models forums are building into a useful reference.) Glad your induction kit worked out well. I don't suppose you got any rolling road figures on it?

No I haven’t! K&N say that it gives out 5.5 BHP at 5200 RPM, I rev my engine up to the red line 6200 I think, I do this practically once a day would this damage my engine in the long run?

it shouldnt as long as the engine is fully heated up, dont go by the water temp mine can show 90 degrees but the oil is only at 60 degrees. it will help clean out the engine as well get rid of some of the crud that builds up over time.

secondly dont worry its a HONDA it shouldnt break even if you maaged to get it up to 8000

I have just fitted an induction kit on my civic sport 1.6 and have not told any one, can anyone tell me if this will make my car fail an MOT emissions test!

have heard about older cars failing due to high emmissions and with the old airbox back on they pass. but dont think newer cars should have a problem as the ecu will adjust everything as required.

100% behind waynne on this one. inform your insurers it might only be £100 but its better than being thousands out of pocket if your involved in a crash. The insurance company will just take one look at it and go " thats not been declaired your insurance is invalidated"

For £1k you'd probably be looking at an exhaust (half of your budget gone for a brand new decent one) and a good induction kit with a cold air feed. Not a lot else to do on such a tight budget.

Welcome to the mad house Jamesy!

I'll be blunt as it's the easiest way, I recently bought a 2007 civic 1.8 vtec as my daily driver and I'm looking for a weekend beater! The reason it's my unmodded daily driver is that you are limited with what you can do with a naturally aspirated engine, somewhat especially the vtec.

For the money you are spending I would agree with Prince I would look at a decent exhaust system maybe even get a custom build if there is someone your side of the water that is decent.

In terms of air intake personally I would avoid the Induction kit's and stick to a good panel filter to help the car breathe. Reason being the induction kit will give more power but generally only as the engine gets to the higher rev range. Fine on a normal car but a vtec you can rev the nuts out of it. In other words you may spend a couple of hundred for a lot of noise but no go.

This will most likely chew a good chunk of your budget, if you do perform a small miracle and get all this cheap then maybe look at brakes. (I have just horrified the entire forum) This is more for a style point of view as you will give the car a better look with grooved discs which in turn mean you can brake later meaning you can go faster for longer and most insurers won't put up the premium, some may even reduce it? Style, function and safety all for a couple of hundred quid!

Beyond that you are then into the realms of spoon parts, custom ecu's, fuel rails, injectors, clutch, flywheel etc which to go back to my original point wont have as big a gain on a naturally aspirated engine so again a lot of brick but not much kick.

Overall though I would do these three mods and then set yourself a goal to get a project car.

I hope this helps and Waynne if this doesn't get post of the month then I'll be very dissappointed!! lol

cheers

So it's pointless getting a induction kit then I've got a civic sport aswell 1600cc been told by my brother Inlaw that a induction kit would be fine an he's a mechanic who's been into the mod scene for years would be nice to know want to make the car faster and sound nice aswell cheers

Induction kits only really start to shine when the engine starts to need more air like when fitting bigger turbo's and pistons and cams etc etc.

God it's been so long since I posted anything! Danthecivic, an induction kit will work fine on the car and at best you will maybe get a couple of horses extra out of it, and that is at best. It will make the car sound better if you get a decent kit but to be honest for the money you will spend on the induction kit compared to a good panel filter, all you are paying for is the noise as an induction kit alone won't make your car noticibaly faster.

In my opinion theres not a huge amount that can be done with a naturally aspirated engine to make it faster other than a decent exhaust, induction kit, bigger injectors (where possible) and a good custom mapping session to bring the full thing together. Anything more than this and you would be as well looking at a bigger engine/type R to start with and work on modifying from there.

This is of course personal opinion.

Hope this helps
