Help with Ideas on a garage ( For my Degree)

hey guys well I am doing a business degree and part of it is to assess the viability of businesses which leads me to an idea.

For people who want to modify there cars in the proper fashion but have no access to the tools there would be an excellent option for them to do this if there was a garage with all the tools a rolling road and some elevated platforms and someone could rent the tools and equipment by the hour! paying something in the region of 50 quid an hour to use the entire set up plus have 1 qualified mechanic on site to advise if need be and assist with anything for a fee.

This means that people are not having to spend thousands in equipment and risking it being stolen by leaving it in their shed or garage at home.

What do you people think about this idea would you use it if there was one by your neighborhood I mean you could also look into the place having more specialized equipment like diagnostic equipment and such.

Maybe call it 'The M Factor'

With such tools, high end equipment and a specialist on-hand would cost a lot more than £50 per hour. Insurance cover within the premises would be another factor as well as risk assessments. Also if carrying out such modifications where would the owner stand when leaving the premises as the insurance cover would be invalid unless declared prior to the work being done?

It's a numbers game Stamford depends on how many people you get using the tools as they are fixed assets you would have to determine how long you expect them to last and offset that by depreciation which is where you can work out how much you need to cover that and them some. That wouldn't be down to the garage if he has insured or not it would just be a matter of if he wants to use it he can be they take no responsibility on what he does with insurers! and when was the last time you got pulled by VOSA for a random check on modifications??

You'll need to look at the true operational costs before setting a price. £50/hr also looks very low to me.

In principle tho it sounds good. One thing you might want to consider is getting an arrangement with a legitimate finance company to help people fund this service.

i think the garage trying to get the liability insurance for anyone to use tools would be a hard point. OK you r spanners and rachets fair enough but likes of compressed air / power tools, welders and ramps etc what about them? the 1st couple of hours could well just be the mechanic doing the H&S side telling them how to use the tools. The garage would get ripped to shreds if someone was to cut off a finger while playing around with an angle grinder unless they could prove that the person had been properly shown how to work the equipment

as for the £50 an hour i think thats dear. the 2 garages i use here are only £35 an hour for the labour. why would i pay £15 more an hour to do the dirty work myself?

Google "Motor Gym Bangor"

It's something similar to what you're talking about, you can have a look and see how they operate.

I looked into doing something similar with a mate about 3 years ago but the public liability insurance was going to eat up all the profit and leave us on basically less than minimum wage. Just wasn't going to be worth it.

I'm suprised it isn't more common specially in the states with mexicans working on low riders, black guys with their cadillac escalades and white guys with the muscle cars and asian guys with the drifting

Black guys don't work on Escalades anymore. They work on "Donks". What's a Donk? See below

Blacks don't care. It's ALL about flash and showing off your wealth. Near ghettos in the states are usually "Rent a rim" shops where you can rent humongous rims like those. Donks is the most universally HATED car culture mainly because they have a habit of finding rare and desirable cars to RUIN. 1980's Chevy Monte Carlo's, Caprice's, Pontiac Grand Prix's, and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme's are common in the Donk world.

Some donks do not annoy me. These are USUALLY cars done up as a joke and don't take themselves seriously. Example. This is a Donk car I like (A 1999-2011 Ford Crown Victoria)
