Hi I am researching ways to improve performance with my ibiza 1.4 16v and was wondering what modifications would actually be worth doing or if the engine size is just too small to make any decent difference.

I was looking at nothing too complicated such as cold air induction kits. Ecm tuning and better exhaust system. But not sure it would be worth it or if it would cause problems .. for example I was reading how induction kits actually lower power at lower revs with small enginen cars and ecm tuning causes faster wear. .

Or would it be better just to transplant my engine for a seat ibiza turbo engine maybe with more litres as well. Or would I have to change the gearbox etc

Or would it be better to wait till I can get a faster car instead. .?

Engine transplant or new car. We've all spent a fortune on our first cars to regret it, not get much extra power and move on to a new car. If only someone had said to me that a 1.0 Clio was never going to be a performance car I wouldn't have wasted £2000 on it doing cams, exhaust, wheels, brakes, head etc...

Suspension and brake upgrades are sensible though, they will improve handling and make the car fun to drive. Drop in the ones from a sportier Ibiza/Seat perhaps the FR or similar for a cheap upgrade.

I think youre right and it would be more worthwhile getting a faster car. Do you know what size engine would be big enough to be worth working on.? I want to keep to a petrol engine .. probably one already with a turbo would be a better idea..

Or If I did later do an engine transfer with a faster seat ibiza engine (I. E when I have the money) do you know if it would be compatible with the rest of the car or would I have to change loads to cope with it..?

Turbos respond really well to tuning, the 1.8T from the VAG group is a great engine for tuning potential and it comes in so many car models.

To drop one into your car you'll need the gearbox and ECU/wiring loom as well. It also makes sense to uprate the suspension to cope with the extra weight/torque and brakes whilst you are at it.

We have a new article on Ibiza tuning on our main site.
for the 2002 onwards version see https://www.torquecars.com/seat/ibiza-tuning.php

And if you have a 96-2002 model this page has all you need on it.

I’ve got the same car, same problem. Did you ever resolve it?
