New year - I'm sure you've all done your budget forecasts and analysis for the coming year:???:

Haven't really thought about it because I don't have a car at the moment but just about to buy one, so excluding that it probably will be somewhere around 200.000 isk. wich is about 1.600 pound

Not totally sure how much I'm gonna spend, but I do plan to put a sports exhaust and sports cat on my car. Can't really do too much yet else my insurance will be through the roof. I may put some security equipment on it as well. But my budget this year is about £1500.

Biggest spend will always be fuel and other running costs.

I'm going to need new discs and pads all round by early summer and I'm considering a mild upgrade in materials. Having previously used EBC materials and found them a bit weak kneed (but the green stuff pads do give amazing bite from cold!).

Currently using ATE discs and pads but propose Rossini discs front and rear with matching pads. So around £500 for the lot includhave theng cost of fitting.

Front drive diesel cars are nose heavy and put a lot of load on brakes. Dissipating the excess heat has got to be a good thing.

I also plan to have the engine coolant replaced with new stuff and add Purple Ice to help heat transfer from water to oil and vice versa in the oil/water heat exchanger.

tyres are due soon as well. Currently I have a bit of a mix n match set with Conti Sports at the back. Firestone TZ (crap) left front and Viking Protech II right front.

I'm going to push things here and fit Viking Protech II's all round. They are a new pattern and the one that's fitted is truly grippy and sticky, wears evenly and at £52 for fit valve balance and VAT for a 215/55/16W is a bargain. They even look pretty with the assymetric tread pattern.

I just count that I will spend to that Probe over 4000€ in the next year:
-The full body kit 600-700€
-Subwoofer and amplifiers 600€
-New tyres and rims over 1000€
-New twin exhaust Greddy 800€
-some horsepower (maybe new KLZE-engine, which provides 194bhp) 1500€

Part of my 2008 resolution is to start modding my car so I might be spending a fair bit this year. I'm not rich so my budget will be roughly 2k.

Part of my resolution is to reduce my main road speeds. I've got into the habit of going extremely quickly on all derestricted roads. Not that I speed without thought or planning but sadly there's no defence against 104mph in a 70 limit regardless of whether you're driving safely or not. Maybe the fuel price increases will help me achieve my goal. Clearly a six month ban and two grand fine would work too but I'd rather not get clobbered.

Failing that I flog the Peugeot and buy a bog basic 1.4 Astra. Or Smart Car?

Any ideas?

I think the current Astra 1.9 diesel is pretty lively anyway. Perhaps I should make speeding really unhealthy for me. How about a 1978 850cc Ford Fiesta? 81 flat out and 0-60 measured by your rising blood pressure. Still, probably only does about 30mpg anyway.

Perhaps I should get a specialist to replace all the airbags in my car with spikes and then get the windscreen removed. Replace the tyres with iron bands and the brake pads with slices of bread.

I have no idea how much money my cars will swallow this year, I'm estimating that my engine build will cost around £600 in total. I would like to replace my rear axle too this year as that has been on its wasy out for a while now, that will cose a good £800-£1,000 for the one I want. Then there's what ever the Volvo needs or what Jo wants done to it (already have a list). I would like to get the Porsche lump In the Minor and have it running this year too.

HDI - get the top speed restricted like in the new German cars (although they are locked down to 150!)

Its completely the opposite with my friends 1.8 Astra SXi, if you gun it down the road at 60/70 then your looking at shocking MPG figures but if you touch up to 100-110, it increases to an impressive 45 mpg.

Which means, he be tempted to go fast because of the high mpg he would get, rather than the other way around. But the cars top end, 140mph does bring back 25 mpg if hes lucky. Its a pretty wierd car...

Yeah the active reading isnt accurate in the long run - but the average one is best.

3500rpm in the Pug in fifth (no sixth) is 116 mph. Typical diesel but it still pulls very hard at that speed.

As for economy, well, 116 mph is not the formula for saving fuel.

If I get the car running before the end of the drag racing season, I will have spent thousands.

However, in order to to reduce costs (my reasoning to the wife) I am buying a lathe and milling machine. This will allow me to make all those small odds and ends that end up costing £50-100+ each at the local machine shop. Shouldn't take long (hopefully) to re-coup cost of machines - and it will be fun :)
